Opinions from people who have gone from 1.6 CS to 1Y
Ok, i'm looking for qualified opinions from people who formerly had a 1.6 non-turbo diesel and upgraded to a 1.9 non-turbo diesel, specifically a 1Y:-
Did the power increase make it significantly easier to keep up with the traffic on hills and uphill stretches on the motorway, or do you wish you still had more power and had gone for a TD or TDI?
I don't need to go fast, i'm happy to cruise at 60, but when I can't even keep it at 60 on a long uphill stretch on the motorway, i'm starting to think I might upgrade sooner rather than later. I like the idea of a simple, reliable 1.9 1Y engine, and it's the most cost effective alternative, but don't want to spend the money if I still end up having to sit in 3rd gear at a million revs to keep up with the trucks!

I'm gonna have to crack on with the definitive guide
the word 'pissing' is safe

Thanks! - I did read through the thread, also found some other quotes on the forum that answer this question. All looking positive so far - my favourite quote:-
"I fitted a 1.9 to mine and the difference is unbelievable"
"I can accelerate going up hills now"
(Though the poster doesn't specify if it was a 1Y or not...)

Re: Opinions from people who have gone from 1.6 CS to 1Y
Since changing from CS to AEF (similar performance to 1Y), I can always keep up more than 56MPH on all motorway hills in the UK, so I never have a truck right up my chuff at the start of every motorway incline. The increase in horsepower may well be marginal, but the increase in torque is 29%. Cruising is at exactly the same speed as it was before the change. My wife was a bit reluctant to drive the van on motorways before, but is now confident she won't get entangled in a "truck sandwich" any time. It's as much to do with safety as performance.
1.9D (AEF) pop-top. Aaaaahhhhh........that's better.

Thanks, that's a really useful reply!

It was me that made that post and yes I have a 1y, put the fun back in to driving although I have been having problems locating certain parts as the 1y I used appears to have only been fitted to the Golf for a few years.

Re: Opinions from people who have gone from 1.6 CS to 1Y
I "up"graded my van from 1.6TD to 1.9 1Y
and it's not really in speed that I notice the difference (since the gearbox hasn't changed) but at a reasonable speed/rev the speed doesn't go down like it did with the TD when climbing a hill...
So I'm well pleased, it's also more fuel efficient and easy/cheaper to fix since there's no turbo involved...
and it's the cheapest conversion. bought my 1.9 engine for £80
It's still not like a modern car in which you don't notice going up but it's lots better now.

Ah! I understand.
Actually I meant to say, but forgot..............
You won't get any gains at all if you fit the Injection pump off your old CS, as it will only pump the same quantity of diesel whichever engine you bolt it to. It's important to buy an engine complete with IP. Most for sale on fleabay and elsewhere are bare.

Re: Opinions from people who have gone from 1.6 CS to 1Y
Hi there
Ive recently upgraded from 1700 non turbo too a fantastic low miles 1 Y
Yes the performance isnt much diffrence but torque is massive improvement!!!
I recently did first long trip touring yorkshire moors and loved it!
Easy reach of 60/70 mph all day long on motorway, would go more but still only 4 speed
Im planning on next step to go 5 speed box but exspensive
Overall well pleased with conversion, yep no speed machine but pulls like a train!
Runs sweet, good mpg and such a straight forward conversion
Even confident at overtaking now, can get out of truck crawler traffic no probs!

Bump - I've now gone ahead and had a 1Y fitted. Thanks to Phil Miller on this forum, i'm now running with 29% more torque. Phil did a fantastic job on this, i'm really chuffed with it!
I've written a blog post about it here:-
