Diesel - Fuel Expansion Tank and Strainer

i am big on originality.

I thought I was alone .....

i'm afraid you are not alone!
All breather and other pipework completed, tank internals rectified, tank and straps re-furbished and all bolted back into place (after all surrounding body work stripped, re-painted, wax-oiled and undersealed.....but thats another story and pictures will follow on a separate thread)

But, speaking of originality ....I am really struggling to locate 2 rubber gaskets/seals for the fuel filler neck. They are Items 5 and 17 on the following ETKA illustration (31-00). Item 5 was missing and item 17 is about twice its normal size due to years of diesel soaking and needs to be replaced!
Their part numbers are:-
Item 5 is 245 201 939
Item 17 is 245 201 196

If anyone can help me locate new/replacements of these 2 items i would be very grateful.

After removing my gear box I ended up taking out my tank dues to leaks and rusted straps. I thought I would tag along on this post.

After reading the last few pages of this post I found the same things once I got my tank out. I had a bit of plastic rattling around in the tank. I also found the Bently to be know help and not look like my tank. I do know my Syncro left the factory as a petrol and has been converted to diesel. So whether it is a diesel tank I am not sure?

I have the EKTA disk but can't get it to load on my Macbook ..

Once the gearbox was out I decided that it was a good time to sort the leaking tank once and for all. My sender gauged stopped working a few yrs ago, I found that the wiring connections had rusted out, so i soldered on some wires as a quick fix. I have also never seen my fuel gauge go above 3/4 and it runs for ever on empty.

As you can see i have had a leak for a while from the filler hose.


The metal part where you fill the tank has been badly welded in the past and was leaking.


The sender works but along with the tank straps is very corroded. Plus I think the sender should have a pickup tube on the end of it?



This the tube that goes from the filler neck to the metal tube that goes into the tank. This is so far the hardest part to find. Only seems to be on the Van Cafe web site and its not cheap!

After a good pressure wash the old tank came up well.


So now its time to gather the new parts and refurbish ...

Just ordering up the parts. I have decided to try and renew what I can, then its ready for another 25yrs...

Parts arrived and I have just fitted my shinny new parts ...

Lovely new straps.

New filler.

The most expensive bit of rubber... The filler hose.


All new pipes.


My only problem was not having the part circled in blue. It is strange that the pipe from the tank pick up is quiet large and then steps down a size via the plastic part circled in blue. Why Mr VW? My plastic step down part was long gone, because of this two pipes had been pushed together and where leaking.

I ended up using this.



The sender was also replaced plus the return pipe in the tank and that strange bit of plastic was refitted.


Lets hope when I fill the tank it all works...

Just read this thread..interesting stuff, the pipe joiner step thingy you mention was not plastic, but brass, and was only needed if the fuel pipes were repaired or replaced as the pipe fitted at the factory has a enlarged end so adaptor is required..just so happens I have one of those adapters I found in a box of obsolete parts I was given!

Interesting to know.

On mine it was a plastic t piece as the fuel also went to the old diesel heater. The plastic stapped as soon as I touched it. The new adapter seems to work ok.

What's wrong with that! At least it's a VW. In their defence they where very good to deal with and sent a pack of cookies with every order, kind of a sweetener

Supply and demand for the fuel pipe. Was 100 bux or a drive way full of diesel
