I wired up a splitcharge system today as per wiki and i have had alsorts of problems any help would be appreciated
Wired as per wiki but the battery light goes out when i accelerate but comes on or flashes when i liftoff also the relay gets warm i have used a 40amp relay and wired it to the charge light. The batteries are engine battery 65ah and a leisure battery 110ah all fully charged any ideas do i need some blocking diodes???
You certainly don't want to use diodes - you will introduce a voltage drop.
Have you checked the alternator output voltage? My money is on the regulator/brush pack.
what should the voltage be and is the reulator pack easy to change also the altenator is about 30 years old would changing the regulator pack make it like new??
You should be seeing 14.2/14.4v - it may be a little less on older alternators. Martin (California Dreamin) will most probably know for certain.
It is easy to change on most alternators - two screws and it is off. The main problem is usually identifying which alternator you have - they are usually Bosch but not always.
Yes the altenator is a bosch it a 45amp i can find the altenator at a price but not the pack you mentioned but is there anything else that would fit maybe a higher amp say 65 or 90 ??
As i sed mine is the 45amp will the 65amp fit with the fan and all the gubbins on the end i also found this but it states its for specific altenators and it dosent state the 2.0l Aircooled
They are fairly long lived pieces of machinery as there are basically only a couple of things to give you trouble normally, first being the voltage regulator as the brushes wear out and then the bearings, (other things can go wrong but it usually one of the two).
I personally wouldn't shell out £100+ without good reason.
