what engine to upgrade too from a 1.6 diesel?
hi guys and gals,
if i have a 1.6 diesel engine water cooled van, what would be the best engine to upgrade to to get good miles to the gallon with a good pulling power so it wont struggle driving through mountain ranges and blow up on me halfway across the world? ha
i've heard of dropping in an engine from a golf or passat, but what engine is that?
and also, does anyone know of any place i might be able to find a garage that does this kind of work?
hope to hear from you soon,
Many thanks
Maddy

You need to do a search for 2E, AGG or ADY. The Wiki (top left, second in).
I had the transplant done in Febraury and now have a Passat (Bj 95) ADY motor instead of a JX 1.6TD.
Fuel consumption is approx - 26 - 28 mpg.
Hills - what hills!
Flat out - don't know but in excess of (GPS) 175 kmh.
It's a bit tail happy on wet roundabouts.
Do it, you won't regret it.

I forgot something which to me is very important.
At 100 - 110 kmh on the motorway you cannot hear the engine.
(Downside - I can now hear the wife).

When you've finished reading the Wiki on here take a trawl through this lot.

Re: what engine to upgrade too from a 1.6 diesel?
Mr Duxass has made a pretty good case for the engines he referred to, which are all petrol engines.
I am making the assumption that your existing engine is the non-turbo CS, as you haven't mentioned a turbo.
There is also a range of Diesel engines which are a considerable improvement on the 1.6 diesel, and which are an easy fit. One is the 1Y engine from various VW golfs. Another is the AEF engine from a Skoda Felicia or Polo (both up to 1998?). I have the AEF engine, which returns around 34MPG overall. Both pull well up hills because they produce 29% more torque than a 1.6. Both these engines bolt straight onto the gearbox and existing engine mounts, and use many components off your old engine. This will be the same for those petrol engines. The AEF and 1Y engines are both normally aspirated (non-turbo), so you don't have the added complexity of adding a turbo/adding oil cooler/other cooling problems.
There is a complete guide to fitting the AEF on BrickYard at http://www.brick-yard.co.uk/forum/16cs- ... KW=#425344" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Diesels are noisier than petrol engines of course, but won't be any noisier than your old engine.
In the end I think it boils down to a choice between the power and quietness of the petrol engine, and the economy and longevity of the diesels. For me it's the diesel every time.
All the petrol engines mentioned by TaD and the diesels can be used with your existing gearbox.

1.9D (AEF) pop-top. Aaaaahhhhh........that's better.

"All the petrol engines mentioned by TaD and the diesels can be used with your existing gearbox."
Wouldn't you have to change the gearbox input shaft back to a petrol one also? One's shorter but not sure which way round.
Isn't the 1.6CS gearbox one of the worst geared ones also?
I would stick with the diesel - you would want to be steam cleaning fuel tank and replacing fuel lines etc going to petrol. The diesel would be far simpler and cheaper to carry out - it all depends upon whether you have cash restraints at the end of it.

Would still use the diesel shaft as you are using diesel bell housing.
Diesel one is 1/2 inch shorter
As said, I'd be looking at a different box with some of the engines

Tdi is a great option if you are looking for economy, pulling power and most importantly low down torque to completely change how the van drives.
Its not cheap....and you will probably have to consider longer gearing.
I can recommend mv engineering in telford to do any kind of diesel upgrade or fix work.
