Alternator advise please

Post by lloydy »

Hi, I'm looking at getting my alternator refurbed/replaced. As well as a diode pack it needs a new clutched pulley. A refurb place reckon with the pulley I'll be looking at just over £100. My alt is a valeo original passat tdi one.
On eBay, you can buy what claims to be a new alternator for £120. I don't know much about alternators, so will these be as good as a refurbed OE one? Or will it be cheap rubbish?

Place round the corner from me (Bow) rebuilt the one out of my syncro for £80 (cash/no questions). I opted for this rather than hassling about with a recon from elsewhere; it may not be any better, but I can take it back easily!

Get a second hand one (i think all mine have gone sorry) to put on the van while you get yours refurbed.

Takes minutes to change. Rather than spend £120 and risk it, thats what i would do. Sure someone with a pony tail has got a spare he can lend you for a week ;)
