I am checking out the pump as this seems a good option, when you bleed the rad at high revs, should water/air come out as per domestic radiator?

When I bleed system (back or front raised,i have tried both!) water and a few air bubbles just oozes out not as I would expect for a pumped system, any thoughts?

If AAZ set up, the route the belt takes dictates whether the pump should run clock wise or anti clockwise, that's why there at two different types of pump.
Let's make sure it's not an air lock first then take it from there.
I thought I had bought the wrong pump until I worked out it was an airlock.

First air then water will come out of the bleed screw.
It's easier to do it with two people, fill the coolant tank to the brim, rev to about 2k revs and keep toppin up, when you can't get any more in,put the cap back on whilst still keeping the revs up.
keep topping the tank as it goes down and repeat the bleed until only water comes out.

Just had a look at the pump rotation . It rotates in an anticlockwise direction when looking towards the front of the car. It is driven by the smooth side of the belt.

Just read a manual I have and it shows an additional water pump on turbocharged engines. I know where this is but not sure if this is working correctly, is it that important for circulation?

Used to be a pig to get the air out! I go a step further than rob and rev the nuts off it! Soon moves any air

If yours is setup correctly I.e belt around the outside of the water-pump pulley (and it runs cooler).mine is definitely the other side which means that it is rotating a different way!!!

Thanks for all the time and effort to help me, I will call the garage tomorrow........

My 1Y had the belt the normal side hence needed an anticlockwise pump - this was the first thing that I checked when I got the engine. As I am going to run the 1.6 v-belt system I am changing it to a clockwise one.
LHD has a clockwise pump if his belt is running the 'wrong' side of the pulley. (The pulley is flat and not ribbed so should be used by the flat side of the belt) This is detrimental to the multi-v formation of the belt as it isn't designed for this. If you look closely there is also little contact area for the belt on his unlike normal belt routing. It works but is not the ideal way to run it.

The tip about revving it's nuts off is worth using - it does seem to 'wind' the pipes better. A baby is easier to wind than some vans!

Like I said there are many combinations of routing the belt, as yours runs flat side on the pump pulley then it should have a clockwise pump.
If you look on vagcat there is a page showing all the different belt set ups, there's about six or seven, some run ribbed belt side on the pulley some run flat side on the pulley, it all depends on the car the engine came from, also Some have belt tensioners some don't.
You can change it by getting a shorter belt and run it like mine in the pic, it will then run it anti clockwise.
I can measure my belt if you like?

Is your engine running in reverse then?
Flat side to the pulley gives anti-clockwise rotation unless you are running in reverse! Quite simple really.

He still needs to know which type of pump he has fitted to be certain though! The only way that I know of telling for certain is to take it off and look unfortunately.

LHD

Was this a pic of your engine before it went in - it's from a post of yours in 2010. If so your engine started off with an anti-clockwise pump and is now clockwise!
