Some help and advice wanted from any AFN Gurus. (NOW SORTED)

I have a little problem with my AFN.

Just had a weekend off roading and went through some quite deep water and it was also quite dusty, just thought I would mention this incase its related.


Anyway it feels like I am really down on power, and it doesnt feel unlike fuel starvation so I changed the fuel filter for a new one just to make sure and it didnt do much to help.

Down steep it seems OKish but along straight motor ways if you go over 55mph the power is on and off and third is gutless as is high revs in any of the other gears, up his is a 25mph job. I was driving around Sailsbury plain in first and second in low revs quite a lot yesterday and didn't notice any problems until I turned out onto the main road and went up the gears.

I did notice that the thin pipe from the top of the turbo to the pre MAF location had come off next to the air filter so could have sucked some carp in I guess but I dont know if there should be vacuum from this or not but there doesnt seem to be at the moment anyway. I plugged the van into the computer and this fault code came up,

Mass Air Flow Sensor (G70)
Implausible Signal - Intermittent

I cleared it and drove home and when I got back it had reappeared.


I took the air filter out and it looked OK with no sign of water in there and took the MAF off the end of the air filter to see if it needed a clean or something and looked at the hoses before and after the charge cooler to see if anything has gone up there, but nothing. I have obviously looked at all the connections and they seem fine but I did notice this bit of residue on the MAF and it looks like it has sucked a little bit of water through at one point in the past.






So what next? Would this bit of wet on the sensor send it into limp mode? Do I need a new one? Whats the best way to clean this one?

Any help would be very much appreciated.

new maf needed! esp if its a hot wire type, sudden wetness will wreck um!

Thanks for all the replies guys, very much appreciated.

I just popped roud the corner to Lloyds and borrowed his MAF sensor and it works a dream James was right, looks like they hate water It looks like where the pre MAF small hose had popped off hence a clean filter and the tiny amount of moisture had been sucked in interfered with the sensor. I am soooooooo relived its a cheap fix and not another engine

Managed to grab a day off today and fitted the new MAF sensor, what a difference

I dont know if its because the small hose must have come off a little while back or not but it goes like stink now. Thanks again everyone

Where did you get the MAF from, and how much? (presume it was a Bosch one)

Only buy Bosch, a friend is a manager for Eurocarparts and says all the others are crap. They get loads of returns!!

It was a £20 ebay special... If it turns out to be a wrong un and plays up a little I will stick it under the seat as a spare/get me home jobbie, It works for now though
