its like how longs a bit of string, all bits off should go without say really , back to metal well back to vw's coat is only if there are real horrors underneath like its been done in dulux or equivalent at some point and you need to get back to a known base, each van is different. the real decider is what is under it as in rust/rot/replacement metal/panals as these decide the cost not the coat of paint at the end

bear in mind that the actual spraying is relatively cheap when compared to the labour cost of the prep. If you can do any of the prep yourself (inclusing stripping down the van, sorting any rust etc) then the bill will be lower!

Onto the pain, it depends what sort of paint you go for. If you want a nice metallic finish, that requires separate base coats and top coats, then the clear on top of that, the painting aspect will cost more than say a 'bog standard' flat colour and clear coat.

Hope this helps.

W'MM'S^

One of those how long is a piece of string Qs. Its very steep for a "mates rates, done on your front lawn blow over" its 'very competative' for the other end of the spectrun with every thing that can be knackered/grotty/cracked/crazed etc being addressed.

Does it include any welding (if needed) labour?
How much work does roof need? are any bits of blown/star cracked gel coat are being taken out and addressed/how much is being flatted and filled/how much is being ignored and covered with some heavy primer work?
Whats happening with seam? smear of clag over the top/all taken out/just small bits being taken out?

etc etc

the list goes on. be anal about your van and go in with a list of every single bit that bothers you on your van and ask what is/whats not included in the price and to what extent is each concern being dealt with. Ask to look at any other work thats in the shop at the time, ask questions, be nosey. If youre not happy there are plenty of bosyshops out there. Reagrdless of all of the above,£3k is a lot of money, especially if it falls off your van first time it rains!
