Yup, that will do it. Good thinking. You have urged me on now to get what bits I have got and do something similar. What is the top end like, is it a canister type thing as the one I have that pushes into a grommet on the rocker box has only got about a 20mm bore pipe that goes into the inlet manifold. I will have to put up a couple of pictures after I have played this weekend. Oh, and I think the one I have in the shed has an oil separator halfway up the breather pipe, anyway I will try and take some pictures.

Top end goes onto this little beast (inlet manifold one is other side).




Here's the elongated holes in the tray - I am going to cover them over with some sheet but still leave them open for draining but that should prevent any sudden surge from braking sending a big squirt of oil up into the bores.
