Oil temp !!!
Just about to fit my trio of VDO gauges, just a thought ... I'm using the remote t-piece which has 1m of braided hose(went the 1m over 0.5m just to be safe) . How accurate will the reading be, surly the oil will cool over the length of the hose to sender???????

Re: Oil temp !!!
The oil temp sensor should be mounted directly to the engine, not via any external pipe work, for the reasons you are already thinking. It has to be either in a "flow" of oil or screwed directly to a suitable metal part of the engines oil system. This is usually done via a special sump plug with the sensor built in, or via a sensor that screws into the oil filter mounting (the later is not an easy option on a WBX engine as far as I can remember).

then there is this, not sure where it fits though !

Re: Oil temp !!!
so one example, and what I have bought but not yet installed is the External Oil cooler as this comes with a sandwich plate/take off plate, something that fits in between the oil filter and the engine.
This sandwich plate can then have a hole drilled in it for the oil temperature sender.
The 2.1 SS/DG WBX (which is trying to be eco-friendly, 80s style) has has the heat exchanger (so that water system raises the oil temp to optimal running temp asap) installed already in between the filter and the engine. So needs to be confirmed which side of the Hear exchanger is should be installed, if it matters

Re: Oil temp !!!
Wait... if you don't have an external oil cooler, remember your oil temp is governed by coolant temp.
Where you measure oil temp is important... After the pump coolest oil (recommended) or post mains, head etc).. hottest.

Re: Oil temp !!!
Sorry but I don't understand!?!... I have a 2.1 DJ that does have an oil cooler, but.. Here goes... I bought an oil cooler from a chap here ETA-BETA as on a run the buzzer would sound, thought that I'd fit this to prevent an engine failure, the type I had read the 2.1's suffer from. Advice from most was to fit gauges to show what was going on. Started to fit the gauges with the remote t-piece mentioned ... All good until it dawned me that the oil in the remote pipe would be cooler than the engine?... Haven't fitted the cooler yet as I don't know how, gauges not working yet as I couldn't make then work by trying to make a loom from the connections they came with, so found a guy on eBay who sells a loom to suit with instructions... RESULT!! So just waiting for that now! But not so sure that the gauges will tell the truth now???kevtherev wrote:Wait... if you don't have an external oil cooler, remember your oil temp is governed by coolant temp.

Re: Oil temp !!!
99% of people fit a electronic sender for oil temp, so all you have to do is fit a wire front to back. As you are realising, a pipe is no good for temps, would be ok for pressure though but i would still rather use a electronic one

Re: Oil temp !!!
So i presume your gauges are all 'wet' gauges then?

Erm... Don't think so if wet means the capillary type!electrical connections to all gauges..

I did that once - never again. Not only did the temp gauge rarely read anything useful, since it was measuring the temp in the relatively cool bulk of oil in the sump, but the sensors really didn't last very long at all before getting battered from underneath. Fortunately, they never actually let all the oil out...

Re: Oil temp !!!
ok, i think i get what your saying. you have bought a Tpiece, with a 1m flexi on one end that you are putting your temp sender in, then running a wire to the gauge, yes? if so get another Tpiece with little or no flexi and problem solvedKINGPRAWN wrote:Erm... Re: Oil temp !!!
That's exactly my setup but the minimum was still 0.5m, so I guess I'd still have the same scenario.. Or do you think that putting a rubber pipe over the braided hose would insulate it enough ??

Re: Oil temp !!!
Cant you just unscrew the flexi and fit the sender directly into the T? i used something like this http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/performan ... re-t-piece" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
if you look on the link, it shows a pic of the same part but with a flexi fitted, so maybe yours will unscrew?
