1.6 Turbo Diesel alternator

Post by Catmint10 »

Hi all
A bit of newbie, so please bear with me.
The alternator on my 1989 T25 has finalyl died. I know nothing about it except the specialist garage has told me that it's not the right one for my 1.6 TD engine (which was also bodged from a scrapped Passat).

I've made some calls today, and no-one stocks these anymore...one supplier even told me to replace the engine as the parts are almost impossible to get hold of now.

So...before I put the van up for sale for parts (which I don't want to do!) does anyone know if there's something else I can use in place of the stock part?

Cheers

Jon

A photo would help me. I can't work out what you have got.
I can't believe they are not available though so don't panic just yet.

I wouldn't be overfussed at what some garages tell you - especially with a replacement engine. In what way has the alternator died? No output is usually just a case of replacing the brush pack/voltage regulator. There are spare parts for far more ancient alternators than ours - bearings, stator, voltage regulators etc. You could even have yours rebuilt.

Some garages cannot cope with 25 year old vehicles. (even so-called specialist ones) Your 'bodged' Passat engine will be just the same engine but from a different car! Same block, same head, etc.

I can get a photo tomorrow when it's light, so yeah will try and post one up.
Thanks for the words of reassurance.
Basically the alternator has been reluctant to charge properly, and yesterday totally gave up the ghost when I accidentally switched the engine off whilst in gear, and I haven't been able to start the van since - the battery warning light is now permanently on.
Also, the turbocharger has been wailing like a baby, but I don't if that's related..probably one for a separate thread!

Oldiebut Goodie - can you recommend anywhere I can get my alerternator re-furbed?

Thanks all, much appreciated

Jon

Sounds like you just need the brush pack/voltage regulator changing - what sort of garage looked at it as they appear to be pretty poor? It is a DIY job to replace - usually two screws hold it in place on the rear of the alternator. (depending upon which make of alternator you have - they are usually Bosch but mine is a Valeo)
