oil coming from exhaust
hello all
i have a 1600 turbo diesel and have recently changed the timing belt , cleaned allthe turbo pipes had all the turbo , exhaust , and manifolds off to clean and fit new gaskets , now it smokes like a chimney all oil is coming from the exhaust and is all over the tailgate , when i came to it after a blast down the motorway there was a small pool of oil on the drive , can anybody help to diagnose the oil problem , my timing seems ok as it starts on the button and ticks over ok , it just smokes a lot when the throttle is pressed , i also took the pipe off to the turbo from the manifold and that had oil in it as well , thanks in advance for any help

Re: oil coming from exhaust
Looks like there is possibly more than one problem here. Are you sure it's oil coming from the exhaust? Any route oil would take to get into the exhaust would also involve it in the combustion process - meaning that it would get burnt.
My hunch would be that it's soot (carbon) you're seeing. A great black cloud behind you as you're driving is most likely unburnt diesel.
The pool of oil on the drive: can you tell by working backwards where this is coming from?

Re: oil coming from exhaust
hello
thanks for the reply , i think its oil as when i park up it drips out of the exhaust after a journey , i will try and check whether it could be sooty carbon , i thought it might have been oil from the turbo being sucked thru somehow ( is this possible ? ) also does the turbo have an oil seal ?
thanks in advance

Re: oil coming from exhaust
Aye, the turbo does have seals. The seals can fail, as all seals can, but if this were the case you'd be seeing an almighty smoke cloud out of the back as you were driving. The exhaust side of the engine is very hot, and anything getting in there is likely to ignite and burn - creating smoke. The colour of the smoke usually indicates what's being burned. In my understanding, oil would burn bluey-black - though there may be exceptions to this.
Have you noticed a drop in oil level?

Re: oil coming from exhaust
hello
the lastest thing i tried as it was white greyish smoke coming from the back was turning down the fuelling and also adjusting the screw on the top of the pump which goes to some sort of vaccuum unit , it still smokes a liitle bit ( but not half as embarrassing as before ) and not much coming out of the exhaust as in the way of oil , so i guess its not coming from the turbo , but maybe just a mixture issue , i hope this makes sense cheers dave

Re: oil coming from exhaust
have a look Here
It has a table of what diferent colour smoke means from a diesel.
I also had an oily tailgate last year after I used synthetic oil instead of mineral oil to fill my 1.6D (non Turbo) I also used oil during long runs etc. I changed back to mineral oil and the problem has now gone away.

Re: oil coming from exhaust
Got that on my AAZ smoking like mad on startup and oil out of tailpipe. LIke he said turbo seals matey. My JX turbo is going to be reconned in the next month. I found a place that does it for £280. Complete rebuild, clean, balance and tested. That includes postage.

How do you know? I was thinking the same...if I put even a tiny bit to much oil in my AAZ it smokes....should be 4.5 with a new filter....don't go off the dipstick as its most likely very wrong, drain, measure, refill...4 litres if you don't change the filter.

Re: oil coming from exhaust
^^ exactly what you said Alex, I had a JX years ago that continually splattered my rear tailgate and gave low pressure until I ignored the dipstick and re-meausred
