Exhaust "popping"

Post by pi quattro »

When i use low gears when going down very steep hills I can hear that there is the odd pop and burst. Not a backfire our anything loud, just a wee putt putt!

Is this normal on a 1.9 petrol carburettor engine or is it a sign of something else? Tune up perhaps?

Also the very rear most part of the exhaust is missing. The tail part after silencer. Could this be the cause?

Hello,

I think you have answered your own question..

Bits missing off silencers is not good news. :(

You may have holes or leaks in the exhaust system that will cause popping on over run

Goggles gloves wire brush big lamp.

Tighten everything up.

Try again..

If it gets better when properly warmed up.. then live with it.

Cordialement,

Sarran has answered your question and that is probably the cause, if not check for inlet tract air-leaks.

That type of popping is caused by a weak mixture on the overrun, so nothing too serious, but as he says, check the whole exhaust first for any signs of leaks because you don't want any leaks to get worse and gradually create a weak mixture situation under load.

If possible, sort out the final tailpipe.

Thanks guys I will give it a good going over.

Seen plenty of t25 with that last section of pipe either missing or broken/rusted. Didn't think it would cause too much of an issue as its only a few inches long.

Cheers

I ran mine without the tail pipe for a few weeks, plenty of popping and the hot exhaust gas melted the right hand bumper end cap. Hopefully the bolts come out the silencer easy enough.
