Failed inspection on 2.6 SA Caravelle / Where's my Vin?

Ok,

Went for my campers first annual test today and failed on a number of items,
1. Poor brake performance on rear left, no problem, will sort that later today
2. Incorrect load rating on rear tyres, damn, they're like new too, but again can be sorted
3. CO idle reading of 7.17, not sure what I'll do about that as I can't find any mixture control on it, and she's running well. I've been offered a 2.5 5cyl TDi from an LT, perhaps a change may be in order.....
4. Tester can't find the VIN number on the chassis, I know its normally behind the front chassis leg on the euro built ones but where is it on the SA's, we can't find it! Anybody else found one on an SA?

That pic shows the VIN plate in the drivers door opening, no problem finding that its the one on the chassis I can't find.
Just been out and found it on my '84 & '86 ones so I know I've been looking in the right place on the front o/s chassis leg, but its deffo not there on the SA one

Hi Maurice, no help to you I know, but I have just been and searched under my '91 2.5 SA and can't find a stamped number either. Vehicle inspectors over here have always been happy with just the VIN plate on the door step.

That does actually help me a bit, at least now I know there's nothing dodgy about mine not having it in the usual location.

If I remember correctly... the SA vans come with the chassis numbers filed off . Engine number was easy to find, but also cannot find chassis number. I'll raise on blocks later and will check again... will give you feedback

I checked the underside of my van... found date of manufacture stamped on underside of chassis (driver-side about middle of van). Both front-wheel arms have numbers stamped on - seems left front is the one. Currently unable to upload pics, but will definitely try again in the morning .

Those numbers on the lower suspension arms will be part numbers. A chassis number would not appear on a removable part. You've done well finding the date, here in the UK we have that much crud and underseal that it is difficult to find any stamped numbers!

Thought as much... and finding the date shows the van was manufactured in '91 and only registered in '92... which means the lady will be celebrating her 21st birthday come October! Another excuse to have a party

I'm currently holidaying in the UK with my bus and have not had another chance to look under for the VIN, but before I left I rang VWSA and they have raised a query with their technical department for me regarding the location of the VIN and the OE emissions specifications, I await their reply

I had also since asked on the syncrosa forum and I've just checked there to find a response which tells me that

only some had the vin no stamped on the rear of the LHS seatbox, under the carpet, some also had it in the seatbox, but very few

So I'll be looking there when I get a chance.
