Square Headlights

Post by salgarfi »

Dear All,

I need to replace a headlight bulb in my rectangular, 1990 AutoSleeper , headlight. Which is the correct bulb to use? When I got my camper, the vendor included some spare bulbs, but the headlight bulb included is a round one, and I believe that a different type might be required for the rectangular type of head lamp. Am I wrong? I'd like to have the correct bulb before I go through the bother of taking off the trim and fiddling with the lights. Also, are there any peculiarities I should be aware of when doing something as simple as changing a bulb?

Thanks,
Sal

You want to get yourself some H4 night breaker bulbs.

You are looking for H4 headlamp bulbs but whilst you are at it I second Robs recommendation...Osram Nightbreaker Plus + bulbs are well worth the extra. They use the SAME amount of power but give a whiter and brighter beam and pattern.

Ignore that it says LandRover...these are the babies.

You will need to remove the upper grille (4 flat blade screws..turn throught 90 degrees to release)
I'm fairly sure you will need to remove each lamp....just four screws holding the headlamp frame.
A wire clip with two notches
These bulbs have three legs....just alight those legs in the holder and fasten down the retaining spring.

ABSOLUTELY***** do not touch the glass of the bulb.

Several ways of doing this..the above shows the full upgrade using new wiring to the lamps.

The simpler upgrade installs relays on the fuse box to minimise voltage drop across the switch but does retain original old feeds and earths to the lamps.

I did the full upgrade and the improvement is drastic....at least 40% brighter and thats on top of the improvements the Osram Night Breakers gave...I would say overall PLUS 60% minimum improvement when compaired to the lamps before the mod and bulbs...drastic is not an over statement.....

I would love to put it next to another square headlamp camper on a dark lane to compare the difference :ok

What this looks like in practice is:

3 metres of twin core 45amp cable
Two heavy duty blade fuse holders with 15 or 20 & 30amp fuses.
Two 4 pin 12 volt 40amp standard relays
About a metre and a half of 1.5mm single core cable
Small weather proof box for the relays.
Cable ties
PVC insulating tape
Various male/female and eyelet connectors
Possibly some shrink wrap or cable protector
Set of Osram H4 Nighbreaker Plus bulbs
2 X 6mm nuts/bolts to make the eathing posts each side behind the lamps.
Some touch up paint (after baring to metal & fitting posts)
Good set of electrical crimping pliers
Possibly a solder iron

Few hours work.
