Oil splatter up tailgate

Post by ginge95 »

Hi,
Does anyone have any ideas if known as a common problem. After a long run I have oil splatter up the tail gate. There is a oil leak underneath but I'm not sure where from as yet?

Thanks again

Yes it's common, find and cure the oil leak.

Gav is it a diesel engine, if so it is probably the crank seal they go and give the symptoms you describe.

I had this problem on a diesel turned out to be a leaky oil pressure switch!

With vans this old "common problem" is probably the wrong choice of words.
"age related", would be better

My tailgate splatter was caused by a crank breather hose

An alternative cause to consider:

I've just found that my 'oil leak' is actually the diesel pump leaking. The diesel is then running down the block and sump getting dirty on the way and therefore looking like oil. Wasn't until I gave it a good clean that I found the cause. At high revs it was almost a constant flow of fuel from between the pump body and the hydraulic head.

Job for Tuesday - refurbish the fuel pump...

Yeh - these old engines - a bit of a leak and the wind catches it and pops it on the back of the van for safe keeping, at least you know your not polluting the roads with it

Does it smell? Check the leak isn't coming from the join with the gear box as could be the input shaft seal.

Just another possibility

Mine leaked for two years from where the dipstick tube entered the block.....a quid I think for a new 'o' ring and washer........I had put it off because I thought it was a big job to replace it. Turns out the dipstick just pushes into the block!!!! It is secured in place at the alternator bracket. Nice clean engine now
