Morning - I need some help. No not with that, with my van.
Spent yesterday checking the timing on my JX van. Cam / crank was bang on correct, but was having trouble getting a reading on the DTI in the back of the pump.
So - engine at TDC on flywheel, DTI in the adapter with its rod pushed in the pump until resistance is felt (arf). I wind the engine back (anti-clockwise) and the needle tracks back. When it stops I zero the gauge and wind it forwards (clockwise) until it reaches TDC on flywheel - but this time the needle doesn't move on the gauge at all.
Any ideas why this might be?
Cheers

Re: JX fuel pump timing
Ok try this; engine at TDC,push DTI in so the pointer goes round once and a bit more for luck [a lot of preload] then turn the bezel on the gauge to zero.now wind the engine anticlock wise untill the pointer stops [probably .8 to .9mm on the gauge?] turn the bezel to zero and wind the engine back to TDC,[clockwise] what reading do you get?
Good luck.
Good luck.
I dont think, so I'm not[do I exist?]

Cheers Dave,
Just been out to have another go.
I've done as you suggest - plenty of preload.
Started the dial at zero.
Wound the engine anti-clockwise - the needle moves anticlockwise to show 1.3mm movement (i.e. 8.7 on gauge) then stops.
Zero the gauge again.
Wind engine clockwise to TDC - the needle doesn't move at all.
Seems odd to me. The rod in the back of the pump has been pushed in until resistance is felt and gets pushed out when I wind the engine back but it doesn't feel like there's anything to pull the rod back in.
Should I gently press the rod back into the pump when I wind the engine back to TDC?

Re: JX fuel pump timing
Hmm!have you got the mark on the pump wheel pointing to the mark[oblong] on the pump bracket[around 10-11oclock].
Is the gauge moveing out when you turn it back to TDC?[is the gauge loose in the extension tube thingy?]

a) yes, correctly marked.
b) not moving.
Rod inside gauge seems to be binding. Kind chap on brickyard says he has to push his back in when he winds clockwise- I did the same and got reading of 1mm. Which is fine.
Thanks for your help Dave - appreciated.
Bit annoying this. I've got the right readings for cam/crank timing and now pump timing, and the bugger still smokes heavily under heavy load.
Next stop - Tappets, injectors then pump methinks...
But - do the tappet clearances have to be measured on a hot engine? I've got a JX.
(I know the turbo is good...) Wastegate maybe...

Re: JX fuel pump timing
Well I set my valve clearences cold, seems to work ok.Has someone twideled the residual fuel screw, the one with the anti-tamper coller on it?
What colour is the smoke?

The smoke is black. Thing is, on hills, foot down it smokes loads, but not continuously. There'll be a few seconds of clouds of black smoke, then nothing for a few seconds, then more smoke etc. I'm not adjusting my foot on the accelerator. Turbo wastegate maybe...
I'll have a look at the residual fuel screw.
Also, when winding the engine (with the rocker cover off) it hisses heavily through the rocker cover - normal or valve stem seals?

Re: JX fuel pump timing
Re smoke..perhaps the fuel enrichment[the can on top of the pump]thingy is leaking?
The hissing is normal i think, air pushing past the pistons?
