How to diagnose Cv vs bearing noise/wear
Hi, I've been reading a lot of threads about rear bearings and seen Jeds video which was helpful. I've just come back from 1500km trip through France with a nasty metallic sounding from rear on turning right only. I think it also comes with what feels like a lumpy steering or wobble in seat of pants on turning. Going straight is ok. Please can anyone help with how to recognise the difference between a worn cv and a worn bearing?

Scraping sound when turning ? Usually a sign of play in a rear wheel bearing ... the scraping is the inwards/outwards contact between the brake drume and the brake backplate.

Thanks Ian. Could it also possibly be a joint that's lost all grease? Probably wishful thinking as not sure i like the idea of changing rear bearings! Just wondered if when welding a new top hat section onto the rear trailing arms recently I could have melted grease of even the out cv boot or if weld could have dropped through boot.....how long for a first time rear bearing change? Have done fronts and other stuff previously.

Hi sounds like a bearing to me.....if you jack up the rear wheel and feel any play from side to side then it is more than likely the bearing....the rears are not adjustable (unlike the front bearings) and replacement is quite a time consuming job..disconnect driveshafts, remove rear hubs.....can be done at home but would be better with a press to remove old bearings and press in new ones.......did both rears on an 89 westy recently all seized up and took all day.....and I do it for a living

I have made some progress, after watching Jed the spread's excellent video on changing these bearings with a new set already prepared I've just bought two good s/h hub-bearing carriers and some decent quality bearings from Brickwerks. My intention is to rebuild the spare carriers in my dry, comfortable house and then swap the units over as per Jed's video which means not removing brake pipe or cv's etc. only thing I may need to do this are two new circlips otherwise I'd have to take off and strip the old bearings first! Cheers. I'm actually looking forward to this job now. Shame I didn't know it needed doing when I recently had the rear arms exposed to weld on new top hat spring locators. Oh well
