Breakdown cover

Post by scarysteve »

Hi there, Summer has passed and the monsoon season has started so no better time to go on holiday in the beloved van. My present breakdown company has just changed its policy and my van is too old to cover - bah!
Can anyone recommend a good 'Breakdown recovery' company for old vans. I have come across the AA at £89 and someone called 2Gether Motor Breakdown or the same cover at £49.95.
Any other tips, recommendations or total avoids please.

Hi scarysteve.....I just posted this in General Chat.....I recommend RAC Cover, I've had to call them a few times & they've been great!!!!!
...................
On a recent drive to Norfolk my red battery dash light came on along The A1 - My girlfriend checked the book, it said pull over....Pulled over, lots of steam, snapped fan belt, phoned RAC....RAC man arrived, bust water pump!! Didn't look good & we only had roadside cover...

Anyway, RAC man got on the search for a water pump & asked a nearby garage to see if they could fit it (they were too busy)....He sourced a pump, to be delivered the next day... To save us kipping by the A1, he said he'd do the work & tow us to somewhere nicer if I upgraded to Relay cover.... Towed to a nearby campsite (in Greetham, very nice!)...The next day, he fitted the pump at the campsite - not a small job - fitted my new thermostat too - then tested it....It took a few hours & he only charged for the parts (new pump, pipe & coolant). We were a bit late meeting family in Norfolk, but the surprise night in Greetham was good fun... Has anyone else been kept on the road by helpful breakdown crew????

I join the AA every year through Topcashback.

This year it was £101 (joint relay and recovery) but I got £50 cashback through topcashback, which always comes through 3 months after joining.

Just before renewal I ring to cancel, cancel the direct debit and rejoin again online via topcashback for the cheaper price

We came across the "vehicle is too old" problem and sorted it by switching from vehicle cover to personal cover, so as long as Lorraine is with me we are covered, she is also covered now for any vehicle she is in. It's worked out cheaper because Lorraine drives our Golf on the school run through the week and I never go anywhere in the van without her!! If my little Polo broke down (I only use it to commute to work) I would have to ring home and get her to come and sit in the Polo so that's covered too.

Three vehicles covered for one premium!! :idea
