I fitted a 42mm one recently - went in no problem - was actually about same thickness as original one. Renewed the temp switch at same time and gave me a chance to clean up and paint the fan housing.

Just been down this route and the supplier GSF informed me, rightly or wrongly that the thin un was for a 1.6 / 1.7 and the thick en was 1.9 and 2.1 So because my reg came up as a 1.7 they tried to tell me that I needed a thin un but she is now a 1.9 so I went for the thicken. Guage now never moves more than half way, good investment then eh ?

thanks for that - as mine's a 2.1 I now feel pretty confident I've ordered the right one . Still puzzling why its £78 at carparts4us but £111 from Europarts for exactly the same radiator but I'm not complaining !

Garage has just rang me - radiator fits and is fitted - everything working as it should - fan cutting in etc and engine temperature measures correct but the gauge just creeps up and up even though the engine temperature measured independently is as it should be - they think it may be the gauge itself - any ideas ? If it is the gauge can you still get them?

You could've cooked the sensor DO NOT use GSF sensors, straight to Brickwerks.

On 2WD's the thick radiator is for 1.6TD's and 2.1 petrols (also advisable for 1.9 diesel upgrades)...non turbo diesels and 1.9 wasserboxers have the thinner rad.

Did you fit a new thermo switch (2 speed fan switch)

Does the thicker radiator fit the space that a thinner radiator would?

Logically I have to say yes...never swapped thinner for thicker but VW wouldn't differentiate on the mounting size and position...that wouldn't make sense.

Radiator fitted perfectly but now the fan has packed in !!! and whilst everything is working normally ( and the new sensor has been replaced with another one ) the light is still flashing and the needle still creeps up and up ! am now going to get an after market independent temp gauge ( with sensor ) and bypass the original gauge which the garage is convinced is the problem. The engine temperature is as it should be and and the fan cut in properly (before it expired). My problem now is sourcing a new fan engine ( or complete fan ) - I've tried Brickwerks , Justkampers , Europarts but no joy. Any suggestions where I might get one or has anybody got one knocking about that I could buy ? My plan B would have to be to get the old motor repaired if all else fails.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
