i just serviced my van and noticed on the lat carb that the choke flap (i think) seems to be open all the time where as on the right hand side it seem to be closed and when you push on it , it seems to spring back where as the left on seem to have no spring
just wondering if this is causing starting issues or is it normal?

Re: carb choke question
If it has twin carbs as the OP seems to suggest, then it's possibly a CU.
Whatever engine it is:
The choke mechanism in the left floppy flappy carb isn't working right, most likely the bi-metal spring is broken/detached, yes, this might possibly account for the difficult starting when cold.
That said they don't need a lot of choke to get firing so, even if the choke isn't very effective, it could be that or it could be a dozen different things setup-wise that make it a difficult starter.

Re: carb choke question
hi guys thanks for the replys even if some are a little sarcastic and help in no way.
i do appolagise i did write it all down then my comp crashed so typed up again quickly
the enging is a 2.0l Aircooled twin carb 1982
starting from cold is fine its starting when warm is the problem just takes ages?
just wanted to see if it was normal so i guess not? im going to look at a doing a rebuild though winter as engine has done 130k and i noticed today that it has blown a spark plug in the past as one was larger than the others so must of been fixed
only had van few months and still getting my head around things and finding out all the little tricks, so when you guys help its much appricated
cheers

Re: carb choke question
Not unusual, there was a thread about this recently, it gives tips on hot starting.bicolour wrote:starting from cold is fine its starting when warm is the problem just takes ages?
Normal, no. But if it starts OK then my previous post about not needing the choke much would seem to suggest that one is working well enough in your motor. Might run a bit uneven until the working choke switches out though.bicolour wrote:just wanted to see if it was normal so i guess not?
Do you mean one plug is different from the other three - the numbers on it not being the same as the others? If yes then that's a bit odd. If no and they're all the same then I suspect one plug thread has been damaged and an insert has been fitted to the head in an oversize hole, it's inner thread being the same as the original thread in the head. It also seems the insert has come out with the plug, as in it's screwed onto the plug's thread. This is not unusual.bicolour wrote:noticed today that it has blown a spark plug in the past as one was larger than the others so must of been fixed

Re: carb choke question
its on the 4th cyclinder i believe front right standing behind the van.
i bought 4 new plugs went to fit the last one and it just would not tighten up so took tin wear off to have a look and it looks like its been drilled out and re tapped and a bigger plug has been used?
when i say bigger i mean the thickness of the thread
so for now i have put the old plug back in into i cn get new one to fit.
looking to change the belt to but waiting for a manual i have the haynes blue one but does not cover my engine so have ordered the green heynes manual and also a book on rebuilding engine as i have rebuilt bike engines before so was soing to see how hard to do van
just incase i get bord though winter lol

Re: carb choke question
Do a compression/leak down test, and check the oil pressure. If they both give good numbers then don't fix it if it ain't broke

Fine, and so has solex picts or webers, or dellortos,
Standard or not ignition...
Throttle linkage ok or bodged...
Thats why a good description and photos are handy...
This shows you why...
