Help! I need cheapest option on my gearbox or just advice

Post by RobJess »

Travelling to beachbuggin in southsea from poole in our Aircooled 25 1600 petrol and 4th gear decided to jump out periodically. As we just got into portsmouth 4th didn't want to know and was just noisy and grinding so figured I would take it easy in 3rd as we were almost at the showground and closer to safety there than home, however 3rd was having none of it and behaving just like 4th.
Nursed her to the parking area in 2nd and left it til we had salvaged rest of day.
Anyway, the recovery guy reckoned it was probably the linkage, but next day the guy who usually works on her for us popped over and informed it didn't sound healthy and would be adviseable to replace or rebuild the box. I'd be tearing my hair out if I had any as I just want to know if anyone had similar problem and how solved. ROB (stressed)

drop the gear box oil and check for remains, the plug should look like a christmas tree covered in fine's no big lumps.

pics of the remains would be good.

Cheers mate. Great idea in principle , but I ain't got time to pull her apart myself due to my mental work schedule hence why it's easier or rather more practical to pay someone to solve it for me. Thanks again anyway. It's good when you know there are people out there willing to take time to assist. Any idea , worst case scenario how much a rebuild is roughly as opposed to a replacement. Rob

if you get really stuck i have an early diesl box , which is almost identical to yours ,

drove it around the yard several years ago and seemed ok

cant remeber exactly where it is now but will have a dig around,

from memory it will need a couple of bits from your box- driveshaft flange / bellhousing but good enough for a cheap option

£50
