Paint Your Wagon - with a roller!

May have a bit of an advantage cos having taken the pop top off and flattened the tyres managed to get it in the garage. Went OTT with insulation in the winter and it's actually cooler than the house which is 25c today.
Take your point though, need to read lots of posts on temp and the amount of thinners to add.
This is one huuuge topic though, gonna take days.
If it is too warm then it can wait, but would like to get something on top of the primer which is probably porous.

Cyrus. ive done the interior of mine, sdmitadley it was all stripped out so was fairly easy. ive only given it one coat aswell with the roller.
I also had the doors off. did the front pillars . I painted the inner pillar behind the hinges with black and looks realy good . ill post some pics if you want. daz

After 4 weekends of prep the misses tells me on saturday morning "were painting something today!" so i gave in




it was too hot and windy, i`d not practiced on anything and we had 20 min before the sun came over the top of the house. that said i'm well pleased with the result. i carried on and fid the front and the b pillars on sunday and thats even better. i think i could have thinned it a bit more but it was so hot with the mix at about 12% it seemed so unny i wimped out and went for it. Got a final bit of filling on the drivers side to do this week and weather permiting it' ll all be blue next weekend.

Hello all, I've been gradually building up to do the respray of my van and have a question concerning body kits. I have the Reimo bumpers and planks fitted to my van, is it easier to remove them all and roller them individually or leave on the van and roller. I'm worried that the bumpers have already been sprayed and when removing from the van will cause a lot more work or the fibre glass split or possibly break.
How have other people approached this?

I would remove them as you don't know what's hiding underneath, there could be some rust issues. Under them that should be dealt with 1st. Sorry I can't help with how they're. Fitted tho.

Hi. I had to register and say hello (& thanks especially to covkid) as I have spent a lot of time over the past year painting my motor with the rustoleum roller method. I'm just about reaching the finishing line now, after 6 coats with rub downs inbetween I've now the bonnet, roof and rear quarter polished and am currently going through the process of flatting and polishing everywhere else.

Finish wise I'm impressed! I'm more about the mechanicals and prefer driving my car to it being a show queen, so I was never going for show quality finish, but its still pretty damn good for a home paint method that's cost me less that £100! Its said that black is hard to finish and I'd agree, in some places I have a milky effect but it can only be seen under fluorescent lights, I also have some larger scratches but that's just from me rushing the sanding process, under sunlight it appears almost faultless.

This was the process I used;
1. 400 grit rub down
2. Gloss Black/ Thinners (4:1) adjusted to suit temperature on day - condensed milk
3. Generally one week drying time between coats
4. 400 grit rub down with sanding block to remove orange peel
5. Repeat 6 coats!
6. 800 grit rub down
7. 1500 grit rub down
8. 2500 grit rub down
9. Menzerna FG500 polish on a white pad circa 10 passes
10. Menzerna SF400 finish polish on a white pad circa 10 passes
11. Menzerna SF400 finish polish on a yellow pad circa 10 passes
12. Poor Boys black hole on a foam applicator
13. Collinite wax two coats.

After waiting a week for a RAL colour chart from Rustoleum I was very dissapointed, only shows about 30 colours.

Can anyone advise where to look to match an existing colour with it's RAL equivalent.
I know a perfect match isn't going to happen, I'd just like to get somewhere close to Ford Matisse Blue.
The full RAL range has loads more blues but it's difficult to match what you see on screen with real life.

Great finish! Just reading your sequence, did you rub the finished coat down with the heavy grit, then slightly lighter grit and then the 2500 or did you put a coat of paint between each of these? I've painted a number of coats but then only used the 2500 afterwards, I was nervous a heavier grade would bugger it up completely?

Hi, thanks and yes the sixth coat was block/ hand sanded with 800, then 1500 then 2500. After each sanding I wiped down with plain water as the surface of some sandpaper seems to disintegrate leaving a grit which then causes scratches.

Pics are the same mate, still viewed on the old puter.
Got the same problem trying to choose a shade of blue, or matching VW.... to a RAL code.
There has to be a solution, if I find it I'll pm you.
