Still thinking about converting the Westy into a Syncro?? is this good value for a donor van?? Mrs is not happy about converting option and thinks I should get a Syncro for fun and leave the camper alone?? can't help thinking she might be right!! (just this one time)

If every part it donated was in perfect working order it would be worth it....but as there is no way of testing anything there really it's a massive gamble...and looking at the state of iti would be amazed if anything was in decent shape at all.

as prices seem to go North this looks like the best value you'll find at the moment, but if you buy it you can be sure a perfectly useable syncro camper will come along in a couple of months time for like £3k, in December when noone wants to spend money because they have to pay for festival of Mamon and you can get yourself a bargain
this thing could well be worth the price broken in bits but if you factor in the costs of getting it, moving it, breaking it and disposing of it it doesn't stack up for anyone more than a couple of miles away from the vendor
it's a petrol van so if you want to convert a diesel it still leaves you short of a lot of syncro diesel specific stuff, if you have a petrol van then it would work

Good point my westy is a diesel so as you said I'm going to be missing parts?? plus I would imagine the gear ratio would need looking at? as I've been dreaming of getting a Syncro for some three years now, I get a bit impatient ometimes but once I've had time to think about it I realise that it's not a good move! just need to keep saving and get something worth getting.

I know I've mentioned this before on here but I'm still very indecisive on which route to take, because the Atlantic is to good to sell. From how I see it I've two options.
1. buy a Syncro but the down side for me is finding room for a forth vehicle on the drive plus extra tax, MOT & insurance
2. convert the westy making it a westy Atlanic Syn which would make it a little bit more special and I don't have the extra running cost of another vehicle, so you can see why I'm looking at going the convert route, although it's going to be a lot of work although this could be done in stages and over time.

I know, keep saving and keep an open mind for now

That's about right
What I mean is if I had a donor van I would strip all the parts of (once I knew they were OK) get them cleaned up and then fitted in stages

stage 1. fit the gearbox & fuel tank
stage 2. fit front suspension & shafts
stage 3. diff controls

Front suspension includes cut and re-weld syncro steering rack mounting panel IIRC, so do that first so it still steers. Then get all the pneumatic lines in without the heavy stuff getting in the way and there's no fear of holing them with weld spatter. Then fit transmission etc.

It all helps and the more info the better, although the Mrs is not keen on this option and thinks I should get a doka for fun and to leave the camper alone.... Only time will tell which route we go
