If replacing a cable it should be the same size or slightly thicker than the existing one.

If the cable is in good nick there is no advantage in changing it. It is the connections and the first & last 1" of the cables that matters.

p.s. Re changing cables, if a person was to attempt this, he or she would have to have the right tools to fit the crimped brass ring connectors on each end of the main starter cable. Personally I would solder them on, but you need the right tools, solder, and flux for that !

Sorry to hi-jack the thread...

When I turn the key the starter turns over swiftly for maybe 1 or 2 seconds and then just when you start to think :? it fires and all is fine. It's not a problem because it does start but I would love to be able to turn the key and whoosh it starts.

Is it likely to be a fuel problem (it happens on gas and petrol so I don't think so)
An ignition problem (spark plugs are about 5000 miles old)
or starter motor (seems to turn swiftly)

I'm tempted to think I'm not getting a spark or a weak spark? but holding it on the engine casing shows a good bright spark.

What do you think?

Have you checked the timing? If it is too far advanced, it will attempt to ignite before the piston reaches the top of the cylinder and act to push the piston back down, increasing the resistance that the starter has to overcome.

As I mentioned above, I couldn't believe that the bush had such a great effect on the starter, but the timing had an effect also.
