1.9dg carburettor vacuum unit?

hi,

i've been told by my garage that i need to replace a part on my pieburg 2E3 carburettor which according to the haynes manual is the vacuum unit? its the black circular unit on the back of the carb (i.e. the side closest to the front of the van)

what does this do? and where can i get a replacement?

The van failed on emisions and this needs replacing to lower what is currently a fast idle on the van and subsequently the emisions.

The vacuum unit you describe is the secondary veturi buterfly.
This unit operates the second venturi butterfly valve or"choke"
It is automatically operated by vacuum
and opens during high power demand
failure of this unit allows air into the inlet side and weakens the mixture causing high HC readings

not currently available new I think
I have a working one in my workshop.

It is available to borrow... if you are desperate.
Then whenever you can find your own...send it back.
Reason is, it's attached to my spare carb.
I don't want to break it as it's a good un.

ah thats fair enough. i know what its like, especially if new parts aren't available you need to keep hold of decent spares!

I will try and hunt down a secondhand one somewhere as I need one before i can pass the MOT

I'm sure you will find one.
But I suspect you might have to buy the carb entirely...and thats not so bad.
Don't pay any more than £50 as its a common carb...despite the claims of rareity.

vacuum unit still listed from VW, note it's a T25 specific part, even though 2e3s were used on different vehicles the carbs are not the same, differnt jets, pull downs, cams for cable connection, vac units etc...vary

if it goes obsolete from VW then ask Brickie to get it from Classic
or use Heritage

I would like the ability to check parts if only to stop my inaccurate posts.

thanks for that aidan, when you say 'from VW' do you mean from a dealership/standard parts supplier? or are you talking about VW Classic Parts from VW Heritage?
If not, I'll check with Brickwerks see what they can come up with.

yes I use ETOS and keep it updated, but it's not definative, just a case of there's still a price showing, whereas when definately obsolete it will say either deleted and/or the price will simply be 0.00
the only way to know for sure is to ask your friendly local dealer (or someone with an account with TPC - Trade Parts Centre) to try and order the part - if it is already obsolete they will tell you (though often young uns say it's obsolete without really checking - ie if there's none at Dowdon (UK VW TPC distribution centre)) and if there's no stock in the UK they can put it on backorder, only if it is then a neg pick (ie they really haven't any at VW Germany) will it then go obsolete, the order is deleted and on the next price update the price goes to 0.00
if it is coming from Germany the dealer should be able to check a due date after 48 hours

Heritage's website allows you to check availability from Classic parts and price which is where all our stuff ends up when the German warehouses clear their shelves of our stuff to make space for more current vehicles' bits

it's usually quicker to order stuff from Classic from Brickwerks, may also save you money and chances are you'll want something else from Simon so you can justify the postage

scary thing at the mo is rate stock from Classic is going obsolete, almost as if someone in Germany is stockpiling it and then once it is unobtainable increasing the price
