Camper convertor question

Post by andyb »

The camper I have I have always thought it was a Reimo conversion.

However today I was sanding down the hi-top for a repaint and under the third layer of paint revealed a large logo

"Canterbury Camper" there was aslo a squiggly line that could represent a bird

this had me interested enough to dig through pile of old receipts I have and lo and behold a sale receipt for the van in 1992 has convertor as Canterbury.

Van is 1985

Now has anyone ever heard of or know anything about this company - all google searches seem to end up with splittys or old Fords - nothing from the 80's.

thanks

Canterbury where well know converters of VW's in the 60's and early 70's. When VW would only approve Devon as UK converters in the 70's they concentrated on Trannys. Didn't know they where still going in the 80's. I think they where actually called Canterbury Pitt or Pit.

Brief mention in my 1971 Caravan guide.

further digging has revealed they were formed in 1973 as Canterbury Lesuire Products Limited and had a workshop in Basildon associated with the massive Ford Complex there - South Essex Motors - if it was a continuation of Canterbury Pitt or not I dont know. They seemed to concentrate on Fords initially - Mk1 transits. Later they used Bedfords - The Sunhome was one of theirs. I still cant find anything in the eighties though.
