air in fuel system Diesel

Post by 16vmini »

just fitted a TDI , but cant remember if air was getting in before the conversion .. but it is now..

what would cause air bubbles to appear from fuel filter to pump ?

whats the bleed screwn on top of filter for ? allthough assume if bubbles allways there its a major air leak somewhere ?

It can be a long process to find the source of an air leak, checking all the pipes, tank, every union, replacing every copper washer, checking the filter vacuum and housing, pump etc etc

Which way do the air bubbles go when you switch off the engine?

I ask because if they run back from the injection pump to the filter, then the possible cause is a dodgy pump. Had a similar problem, and had checked/replaced absolutely everything. Fitted an inline fuel pump which didn't cure the problem but showed the source...diesel was leaking out of the input shaft on the front of the pump. One half hour trip to the local experts and it is fixed!
