My new yorkshireman wheel carrier

Post by Pickles »

As a Yorkshire Man I was not going to fork out £450 for the lovely SyncroNutz wheel carrier.

So I have been carrying my spare wheel around on the roof or on the rear bed area.

This is not ideal, I did use my Fiamma bike rack until it broke carrying 3 bikes and a wheel.

So I decided to design and build my own.

My design was copied from Go Nacho Go and Go Westy design.

And my good friend Dave Spillar (squareblue) SOKAowner helped and welded.

I used some scrap and some new steel.

The build is nearing completion.

The rack can take two spare wheels or one and a rack (yet to be made).

The rack will carry jerry cans or other stuff.

One of the supports is removable so only one side has to be swung out of the way to open the tailgate.

Havent design or got a catch to secure it back yet ( any ideas most welcome) Have thought of Lynch pins, shoot bolts, bolt, catch. Not sure

To the OP, a bit of constructive criticism: you may find you design a bit springy and the pivot point looks a little small to hold up ~30kg of wheel and tyre.

To Andrew: that one, with the extension arms, looks like a crop sprayer! Nicely made (I like the detail in the side brackets that sit into the body side pressing) but f### me it's an ugly bugger and completely defeats the point of having a tailgate! You have to stand on it to access the engine?!!!

To Ian: I know but its beautifully made with great attention to detail.

To the OP: Spend the money ......

If any body has any comments, other than scrap it, stop being a tight get. I would appreciate it.
Thanks for your comments guys.

Looks like I will be at the back, on any syncro run.

Yes there is a little flex, but it is the bumper flexing not the carrier.

My carrier will carry 2 spare wheels thats £900 of the proper job.

I need to spend money on welding and new panels.

I based my design on this

They are spending 3 years driving round the world

Still not sure how to secure the swinging arm.

Good for you to try it out. If it needs revising then revise it. Great blog too. I love their hot shower.

bumper is attached to tow bar by 4 usually, but often only 2 M8 bolts, please tell us that you haven't attached your frame to the bumper, which is a stressed deformable non load bearing bit of adornment

Pickles, I can see that you've gone for the "sodding great lump of hot rolled box section" school of thought for the replacement bumper. That won't flex and I pity the poor bugger who runs into the back of you!

I'm only going by what we did for Neil's carrier, even with 40mm round tube (scaff) it still needed a clamp on the vertical arm to stop it springing and rattling. The pivot was about 50 dia x 70 tall, to give some bearing area for the offset load.

My steel angle bumper is welded to the existing bumper mounts which are bolt to chassis with the standard 4 bolts.

Been on my van for over 20 years, towed race cars, syncro's stuck vehicles.
