Factory-fresh VC or stiff combined with a decoupler for offroad versatility? Well, I like the idea of both, but there's only one way to find out:

Which is why i was asking about the mechanics of it as much for ghops benefit as my own.
With a decoupler decoupled and in a 'stuck' condition will 4x4 be instantly engaged once decoupler is actuated or do certain conditions/rotations of moons arounds suns have to occur before it locks in?
Im envisaging a condition where your on a grassy slope back wheels spinning; you engage decoupler and nothing happens.....
a) because there is a vacuum fault (as was the case)
or
b) because the decoupler does not lock in because there is no rotation at the prop end of the transmission due to lack of forward/reverse motion?
Trying to get a handle on the working of the decoupler and how it interacts with the transmission.
Indulge me

Re: Feeling pretty bloomin glum about my Syncro
if the prop is stationary then as the rear wheels turn the rear pinion shaft will rotate allowing the decoupler to allign and couple, the failure was down to a vacuum issue, worst case scenario you climb under and manually engage it assuming you can get under
but it's precisely in that situation you want the syncro to automatically go 4wd sir there you go

Re: Feeling pretty bloomin glum about my Syncro
As much as it must be nice to have 3 knobs I just can't see why anyone would want a decoupler. I would rather my VC chose when 4wd is required rather than me pulling a knob when it's too late. That to me is what makes a Syncro a Syncro. If you want ultimate off road performance then it would be solid shaft and a decoupler for road use. I wouldn't fit a decoupler for the sole reason of having a tight VC, I would replace the VC. Which I did.
Greg, I'm glad you got it sorted. I'm gutted I can't make next weekend. Next time we meet I hope I'm not hungover and late for work!

Yes I have to say if it was my choice I think I would have replaced the VC. Although the notion that it might help my mpg makes me feel better about things. Although I am sure someone will tell me otherwise!
No worries mate, I've had my fair share of those!
