Battery light

Post by Trunkster »

I had a lazzy starter motor so I got myself another used one off e bay. My origional one had 3 terminals on the back the new one only 2. I have used this new starter for about 4 monthes. I fitted a volt meter in the cab and I run at about 13.8 volts but this starter too has started having problems. I took my origional starter to a place in town where they test repair and recon motors and alternators. It appears that my starter was fine it just needed a good whipe out and contacts cleaned.
Yesterday I fitted the starter and changed the wiring back to 3 terminals ( one rather large black one 1 red with yellow and 2 smaller red ones that share 1 conector) and it started first time. I then pulled the 3 pin plug out of the alternator cleaned the contacts with emory board then sprayed it with electrical contact cleaner and pushed it back in. I took the camper for a half hour drive later. It started first time but my battery light is on and I am only showing 12.3volts when driving! When the ignition is off the battery shows 12.4 volts across the terminals with my multimeter. The volt meter was only a cheap one so I expect a different reading compaired to my multimeter but I would expect the driving voltage to be the same as before! Does any one have any idears what could be wrong? :?
Thanx
If in doubt give it a clout!

Yes, your alternator is not charging the battery.

Recheck all the connections you've just touched.

Alternator brush pack (i.e. voltage regulator) perhaps? A cheap part and easy to fit.
