Hot start problem...again

Post by ambibus »

Hi all

I've had a hot start problem with my van since I got it 2 years ago, starts first time cold, spins over for 'ages' (5 -10 seconds)when warm a stinks of petrol.
1.9dg 42k full service history
changed plugs filter, had carb cleaned, has been to different garages and a local VW wizard has had it for 4 days and says there is nothing wrong with it.

Choke flap not sticking, VW wizard mentioned something about a intermittant Hall sensor? fault in carb. :?

I've been pressing throttle peddle to floor once and releasing and pressing in clutch when cold to start it, pressing clutch and holding throttle down to start when hot.

Spoiling a nice van,

Any ideas?

Paul

. . . and holding throttle down to start when hot.

That last bit sounds like it might be the problem to me. For a warm start, turn the ignition key and just dab the accelerator (i.e. press it part way down, not all the way to the floor, and then release it). Sounds like you've been giving it too much throttle for a warm start, so it then stinks of petrol.

Hi Tony

will give that a try, it start first time every time for the mechanics at the garage, they don't even touch the throttle which i have tried!, its like when you go to the doctors you feel ok when you get there.

Ta Paul :)

Worth a try as it won't cost you anything (and might save you some petrol!). We run on lpg nearly all the time so my memory of the right starting procedure for petrol is a bit vague, but i'm 99% certain that's how I warm start on petrol. It really doesn't need much throttle for a warm start.

This sounds like it could be the answer to the problem I'm having, will get under van ASAP and check wires to starter. found a reciept for a new starter motor fitted 2007 so that should be ok? can here a pinging springy noise when its spinning over though before it fires....

Sorry to read in another thread that starting technique wasn't the fix for your problem Paul. I'd be surprised if it's the starter connections etc that's the answer to your problem though because you said that yours turns over for 5 - 10 seconds when the engine is warm (and there's a smell of petrol) but won't fire. No harm in having a look at the starter connections and earths though. The "pinging springy noise" sounds like the solenoid and pinion doing their job.

By the way, I fitted a new Bosch starter from Gsf to our van in 2008 and it fixed our intermittent hot starting problem but I had to fit another new starter (a Lucas one from Euro Car Parts this time) in 2011 to fix the same problem. :( (and I fitted a new starter bush each time I changed the starter).
