Side mirrors loose and move at high speed ....

Post by cal »

Does anyone elses side mirrors blow in towards the camper when they are travelling on the motorway? ... If so, has anyone found a solution for this other than banging a screw into the joint to permanently fix it?

Cheers! :ok

Try tightening the nut up under the fixing bracket. If that does not work. This is worth a try.

1.Remove mirror.Under the bracket there is a nut.
2.spray the nuts with plusgas.(if seized)
3.take off the nuts.the spring.and the half round piece of metal.
4.give the tapered shaft a good emery clothing.
5.grease the shaft.and re assemble.

My patent method for when the spring has lost it's strength is to grease your balls and dip them in sand and reassemble - rock steady and lessens the chance of snapping the shaft as some people do trying to tighten it more. Mine don't move a single mm yet can still positioned with reasonable force.

That may be it, as you say oldie, snapping that shaft is easy to do...

Sanding your balls it is then, er, I mean mine.. Ooer!

Usually at that point it all falls apart in your hands - there isn't another rusty washer stuck at the bottom of the shaft is there?

Or alternatively, once you have taken the nut and spring off, take the bracket that screws onto the door off the mirror. Then insert a locking washer onto the bolt between the bracket and the rounded metal support on the side of the mirror. Then put the spring washer and nub back on and tighten up. I tried various options before this but I found that finally my mirrors are no longer floppy.

There shouldn't be anything else holding it together - a gentle tap or gentle leverage should be all that is needed.
