2.0 CU Auto with *very* stiff throttle - Anyone else?

Post by ed_crouch »

Hi all.

1982 2.0 (CU with twin Solex carbs) Aircooled automatic camper has a really stiff throttle pedal.

The cable snapped the other week(!), so I replaced it, and still a very heavy throttle pedal. So much so the base of the pedal is pulling out of the floor!

Do any other Automatic owners have the same problem? I have a mate with an almost identical manual bus, and the gas pedal is light as a feather.

Do "they all do that, Sir", or is there some experiential wisdom I'm missing out on?! As it goes, the throttle pedal mechanism is going in the bin when I've finished milling up a billet pedal, pushrod and rocker arm assembly - watch this space. "£25 for that silly little underfloor pressed steel rocker bracket?!? You're having a larff, Guvnah..."

Thankyou - this place is already proving to be a goldmine, and I will be contributing by adding my experiences and epiphanies as they occur!

Ed.
P.S. I do like to make things, particularly machined out of billet, so there might be some design development of those parts that seem a little pants, like throttle pedal assemblies, the hopelessly sloppy, rattly throttle actuator shaft that sits between the carbs... That sort of thing. Watch this space over the coming months...

It could possibly be the conduit that's breaking up?

Or has someone replaced it in the past and pinched or kinked it somewhere when refitting?

Not correctly routed through the tinware at the rear of the engine? (Should sit in a little tube)

I'm afraid I know next to nothing about auto T25s, so I'm just going off issues I've seen on manual vans.

Replacing the outer with rubber fuel hose has to be my favourite, not surprisingly, it didn't work very well

Sorted it. where the throttle pull-rod pivots on the kickdown lever, it was seized with rust and stiff as hell. I cut the end off the rod, tapped the inside of the Rod M8 and will fit an M8 male rod end as a new pivot. Probably also clamp a penny washer in there too to limit the articulation on the rod-end as really I want a simple pivot.

Job's a goodun!

Still will be making a billet throttle pedal tho! Pics to follow.

Thanks for your help folks.
