Pop top or high top what's your preference ????

Post by Webs777 »

:ok good morning guys and gals. When I set out to buy a t25 I wanted a list of preferences but the only box my new van did not tick was it did not have a pop top but a hightop instead . Now I love the practicality of the hightop as the storage space is superb and it sleeps my 2 kids without fussing about and you can get straight in and stand up and cook with ease. But I've always loved the sleek look of the Poptop and the ease of getting under hight restrictions :rofl so come on guys give it to me straight what's your thought.
Leigh

Once having a high top is the hole in the correct place for a Poptop ( if not Spose extra bits can be wielded )
What Poptop is recommended ? :)

The general consensus over the years has been that in order of aesthetically pleasing to the eye the list runs Tin top, Pop top, High top. In order of practicality for a camper van however, the list then does a complete U turn.

had all 3
each had there merits

Hello there well the van started off as a panel van and the pop top was added later. It seems a bit lose in areas and I was thinking about re sealing it but if I'm gonna take it off not much point. Do you think removing the top would damage it too much ? I bought her as she was such a bargain and in great condition internally and externally it was operatunity not to be missed. I don't want to sell her as she is a lovely girl and it's spec all round suits me and been loved in her past very much as it shows with how things have been done. She has a very in cluttered look and a interior set up I like. She will be going in for a compleat respray and body work at the end of this years camping season the pop top was just to add to her make over :D

I can see the practicality of the high top but they ain't pretty most of the poptops ain't much more pleasing on the eye, the tin top looks best, however I will have an :alternative available within the next few weeks as I am developing a low level front elevating roof with austops as fitted to the t4 & t5 it should be redy to put on our stand at Busfest along with bonded windows.

:) wow I will be keeping my eye on this one. If you have any web links or pic of what it might look like post it up  I have looked at many t4 pop tops as I was going down that route before I made a teardrop. Only thing is the cost.At the moment A pop top new for a t25 is £2000 ish and that's a lot of money
I was thinking more of getting a old one keeping it more orriginal. But would never rule a new one out if the price was right :ok

You can't see the beauty of a high top until you are sat in it

I like pop tops. but own a high top as i didnt think about the difference when i bought my van.
however i love my high top when there is gale force winds and i dont have to worry about th pop top being blown away or ripped.
But car park height restrictions annoy the pants off me

High tops don't have to look ugly...
with some imagination you can make them look ok

I'd go further and say that IMO some hightops look better than some poptops!

This question does exercise my mind a fair bit (note to self: get out more). I love the look of my tintop and as a day / weekend van the lack of headroom doesn't fuss me at all and me and my 2 girsl sleep in it quite happily. But I'm loving the van sooooo much I know I'm going to end up using it more than I envisaged (a good thing, of course) so then start to wonder about retro-ftting a hightop...can't justify the cost of retrofitting a pop top but there are very good high top options for £1000-£1500.

But then I think I really don't want to cut up a tin top - after all every time someone does that there is one less tintop in the world....

So then i think I could swap it for a pop / high top van...but she seems to be a good un and she's 'mine'! (Emotional attachment to a van, honeslty man get a grip!)

So then i think I could maybe buy another as well...but that's plain daft...and expensive...twice the MOTs / insurance / tax etc - and with my luck I'd buy a dog.

Aaaaarrrrggghhhh decisions decisions...

Meanwhile I'll just carry on using her as she is and think about it!

I'm not one for form over function, so high top every time. We had a pop tart once, pain in the @rse. flappy in the wind, cold, no storage, hinges rusted, heavy to lift (needed new gas struts) Who gives a monkeys left testical what it looks like its a camper for camping, get the one that best fits the job!

My Sister-in-law has an Autosleeper hi-top and loves it because it has more fixed fittings area, i.e telly and all that, but, doesn't like the effects from high winds from passing lorries - just returned from a trip down to Biarritz and reckons it was a bit hairy at times, but likes the fixed-sided pop top on my van, plus the ease of using it in car parks with height restriction anti-piky bars.

So, you pays your money and takes your choice...

Waits for the 'unstable in high wind' debate to kick off....
