Don't get me started on Pakistan, the Karakorum Highway is an amazing 4 week road trip in itself.....

From wiki.....
"The Karakoram Highway (KKH) is the highest paved international road in the world.[1] It connects China and Pakistan across the Karakoram mountain range, through the Khunjerab Pass, at an altitude of 4,693 m/15,397 ft as confirmed by both SRTM and multiple GPS readings.[2] It connects China's Xinjiang region with Pakistan's Gilgit–Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa regions and also serves as a popular tourist attraction. Due to its high elevation and the difficult conditions in which it was constructed, it is also referred to as the "Ninth Wonder of the World."[3]"

Got a great picture somewhere of us at the Pakistan/China border.

Oh, and obviously we 'watched a funeral' not a funnel in Iran!!

 Yeah, next time!!

Your route is amazing. The countries & distances travelled in the time is incredible.
We just did it differently, (although we did have a slow 1.6 Aircooled VW DIY camper, who broke down 4 or 5 times & we had to take the engine out on the KKHighway in a drainage ditch at about 3000metres! Break-downs do create the best & worst experiences/memories  ).
Looking at your route, in the time we spent driving up one road (KKHighway) you drove across the entire ancient world!! (Iran, Pakistan & India)

We thought about Tibet/China but at the time it was a massive ball-ache, including chauffeurs, pre-booked hotels, extra insurance & driving tests!
Has that all changed now? Or is it still a "bar-steward"!!

Well done, fella :ok

Both of you can come visit malaysia again on your way to Australia!!! BTW, the shipping agent needs a copy of the carnet that says your van has exited Malaysia to Thailand. Could you snap a picture of it.

I noticed on their facebook updates about it, and them having to be towed for quite a length of time. They are getting a new box flown in, but are seriously over budget now.

Pakistan anyone?! Our new video is online NOW! See here: http://www.easy2design.de/bla/2012/07/2 ... fentlicht/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Happy watching,

.martin+sarah, Ulaan Bataar, Mongolia

P.S.: About the gearbox... pinion nut popped off!! Should have know that there is a HD version to prevent exactly THAT. Bummer. Lost pinion+crownwheel and some other stuff, all bearings and 1/2/3/4 gears still ok. 6000km of rough terrain on close to 40000km all in all seems way too much for such a car...

Sorry to hear bad news about box. I take it, its a TDi conversion?
There is a lot to be said for standard stuff when overlanding. Our 4 X bog-standard 1600 Aircooled break-downs cost us a total of 60 odd quid. There was even a tiny, back-alley, Audi/VW specialist in New Delhi where we bought ignition stuff even though we never saw another VW in the whole of India!!

On another note, while I admire your trip, is it really a good idea to be handing out sweets/treats to any kid who pushes/shouts & puts his hand out?
IMO, Probably not & will make life alittle harder for the next traveller. Please stop.

:ok
