Hello again,

19mm 12 point socket (as above).... but before you go undoing that - why are you undoing it? You don't need to remove it to change the cambelt. The crank pulley on a 1z/AHU doesn't suffer the same as an AAZ with pulley wobble, and unless the crank seal is leaking I personally wouldn't undo it. It's really tightly done up so you'll need a compressed air gun probably - the only way I've taken it off is with the engine attached to the van and a long extension bar.

Other people might have other advice, and I may be wrong - just trying to save you some hassle.

Engine went Bang...........

Post by Isolly »

Me old engine had a new alternator, and the pulley wheels from my old engine are different to the new one so was just gonna swap the pulley wheels over so I didn't need to get a new alternator that would fit the same belt...

the alternator (Aux belt) runs off the harmonic balancer not the crank pulley - that's for the timing belt. Just change the harmonic balancer - the 4 allen key bolts around the crank bolt....

Are the harmonic balancers definitely different dimensions though - are you sure you don't need to just change the water pump pulley?

(Pics below are whatso n my phone at mo.. best i can do till i het home)

as below... here is a pic i have from my phone of my old engine

the bottom crank pulley outter wheel.. and the waterpump wheel had grooved for a thin alternator belt

Image

the new engine (cant see wel form this pic) has a wider Smooth type track. (i've change the waterpump in this pic)

Image

on my old engine when the alternator was fit, all lined up... once the belt was on.. now.. i arent sure if all will work with the current belt.. or.. if a wider belt will work the the current alternator i have.

if any of that makes sense of any kind...

Right - so you have a jx style alternator on the old engine? If you want to keep that setup then you'll need to change the balancer but you just need to remove the allen key bolts to do that....

forgive me for not being fully in the know about the names of things (still learning) so googled it.. lol

is there an easy way to get them off.. as from what i can see... they're held in by 4 allen bolts and the 19mm bolt that i am trying to remove..

or would this prove to be more work than good.. i know it would have probably been easier to change the alternator.. but if o have a perfectly good one i didnt wanna be throwing more money into another...

it's up to you what setup you want - the tdi setup has a better belt and allows for a higher powered alternator, but it's easy to change this setup with the engine in place. You only need to get the 4 allen bolts off as I've said - don't touch the crank pulley bolt.

How did you the water pump pulley off? However you did that you need to employ the same method. I use molegrips on the rim and lock it against the next pulley, but some people might frown on that technique.

ok - well the way I get the pulleys off as I said is to clip molegrips on the rim and rotate anticlockwise until it locks against the next pulley (water pump), then you can undo the bolts. Reverse for doing up.

There is a tool for doing that with the waterpump but I don't know of one for the harmonic balancer. Some people might say you could use the centre bolt as a counter-hold - I don't do it that way as I don't like stressing that bolt as it's a stretch bolt....

Err, no.

To be fair this does seem to confuse a lot of people. Some cars have the engine fitted across the engine bay (transverse), some have it in-line (longitudinal). Though VW used the same engines codes for either design, the block castings themselves and some peripherals are different, so the JX right-hand mount can only be fitted to a transverse block. Proceed with caution..

ok.. so i bit the bullet and went out to get myself a replacement alternator.. so all good on that side now... the down side is i still need to get the 4 allen bolts off the Harmonic balancer.

as per previous posts.. the heads have now rounded..

tried hammering a spline into them to free them and didnt do much good...

had anyone any other suggestions for removing these?

i've picked up a new alternator and cam belt.. and wondering now.. how i would go about setting the timing (once the HB is off) with the engine out.

is there any way to tell where TDC is as i can't line it up as per the lil arrow as nothing to compare it to. and what position should the first cam be in when sstarting to adjust the timing, or would this already be in the right position once you have a cam lock in place?

thanks :)
