Hi
Just bought the DOKA it has a 1.9 DG in it. Was a very fraught journey home could not get past about 40mph and very poor throttle response. I am going to go through things later but advice please.
It has a crappy old K&N on top of the carb just pushed on – no air box. Have used these filters before and like them but on researching it looks like hoses etc coming from air box.
Is this an acceptable method of alternative filter or is restoring to original air box and filter suggested please.
It has a Pierburg 2E carb
I have taken a few pictures for illustration and would welcome some advice –Thanks again
Hi Ian
Your engine bay has remnants of a fuel injection setup (ecu and relay box on left). You sure that isn't a DJ with a carb plonked on top? Either that or someone's stuck an old DG in for cheapness. That's the reason for the K&N, the DJ airbox would be wrong for a carb, as it has the airflow meter on it. Looks like they've binned the whole thing, and stuck that on instead. I have a few spare airboxes if you want to put it back to a more standard setup. Should run fine with that one though.
Try as I might, I can't see any vacuum pipes in the pics. Can just see that the dizzy has a vac unit on it, so check the n/s vac port on back of carb is connected to it. O/s one goes to missing airbox, so not required and should be blanked off.
Your water hose to choke (perished pinkish hose) is wrong - should flow from n/s head to manifold, then out o/s end of manifold into choke housing. They've bypassed it so you have no manifold heating.
Throttle cable setup is wrong (was a DJ!) and bodged up with amp connectors. Maybe you are not getting full travel, hence no power??
In light of the (possibly poor) engine swap, could be a few probs to sort out. Maybe timing, crudded carb or filter, bad or loose plugs....could be lots of things. Back to basics and give it a good service, then see what you've got.

I can see a vac line to the distributor.. the wiring connected to the carb..manifold heater, de icer, choke heater, is another lash up
the distributor looks out of position to far retarded.
the cable is a proper lash up and as said the pipes are wrong
Oh dear just my luck – get a good body and the rest goes wrong.
Checked and definitely a dg engine although says 2.1 on log book – perks of getting a mechanic mate to do the deal miles from home I suppose. Still I am where I am and thank you all so much for the information, I will give it a good basic go through already done the cap, plugs and rotor arm just to get it home.
Can I please ask for some advice apart from the good service it will get to try and find the best way through this, the engine does appear good and not blowing any smoke the rest does appear a right mess.
Please what in your opinions would be the best permanent fix remedy for this tale of mis-wired and mis-carbed woe. I want to do this once and do it right
definately a DG so there's DG stamped on the block under the breather tower ?
If so then get the correct engine bay wiring loom and the missing bracket for the throttle linkage and the correct throttle cable and other bits and bobs and build up as stock
all the bits will be available from the breakers but will take abit of searching to get them all, best if you put up your location and find a local member with a DG installation so you can see what should be what
selling the old 2.1 stuff will help pay for some of the stuff you need for dg
if block says dj then I can supply everything you need to revert to 2.1
I don't have any 1.9 stuff I'm afraid
Thanks for all the advice and as engine seems pretty ok I am going to do the basic service and check everything
But when it comes to the wiring and plumbing and air hoses etc I don’t have a clue of lay out and have been trying to get a clear schematic or diagrams that lay everything out
I have a Haynes and yep pretty good. I have a big dilemma. I want to get this spot on and thought I was buying an up front vehicle – it turns out not. The engine seems tight and does not blow smoke. I agree the other symptoms are probably caused by needing a real good going through and service.
My dilemma is I have a 1.9 lashed up in a 2.1 engine bay. I intend to LPG this as I want the best economy I can. My wife hates me enough already as she thought I was coming home with a full camper, so death threats are not uncommon in my house at the moment coupled with much glee as it has backfired on me.
With LPG as the final intention do I clean up and re make all plumbing, carb stuff and electrics as kindly suggested here or put in a 2.1 lump (if I can get one).
I don’t mind either way just want to make the best of what I have ready for LPG
If this was a motorbike I would be happy but first venture into big stuff and for a bike bod there seems an awful lot of spaghetti under that big hole. Will probably pull the engine out to refurb the bay so things like ecu are they but no idea if they work or not.
Steve has nice new kit for the 2.1 lpg systems, I'd advise talking to him about the choices and costs and results
Probably worth doing a compression test on the 1.9 just to make sure it's not too worn as you say it seems good so may well be worth sticking with it unless a good 2.1 comes along
Are you sure it is a DG under the carb - it could have been an ignition/injection issue with the 2.1 and po went to carb for 'simplicity' , there's lots on here run 2.1 blocks with 1.9 carb, mostly with lpg as the carb is effectively just a throttle body then
Just had a re check and yes stamped on block right in front under the tube is DG149488 so must be.
I have just found out last night some of the history and it appears that the vehicle was a show vehicle for a vw camper and vehicle restorer and seller company. Small company but well thought of. They had a big V6 type engine in and i went bag so they fitted this one and sold it on. So no idea of anything previous and the last owner did no miles in it - probably cos it is like it is
Will do the compression test and thanks would be a good start
Stupid question - but do good 2.1's come along or would I have to buy recon?
