Re: 2.1 DJ. Syncro. Total cut out when driving.
I had something similar years ago on my 2.1dj, completely random breakdowns, then would start again. For me it was the Idle Stabiliser, on my 2.1 DJ that was the grey box on the LHS of the engine bay, about the size or a large matchbox with two cables going into it. When the problem happened, I bypassed it by unplugging the cables going into it and plugging them together (1 male 1 female).
Might be worth a try next time it conks out on you..

Cheers Haven't got another one of them spare. As its a occassional fault its a real pain.
Think I might get aload of service bits anyway, cap, arm, leads, plugs, then see.
Horrible driving listening/waiting for it to stall.
Drove 3 miles today...... fine.

3 miles is not a drive, it's a short walk!
Does sound like an ignition fault though. If the sparks look remotely yellow, they are sub-standard.

Had the Idle Stabiliser play up on my DJ, you can bypass it by unpluging the two plugs and connecting them together. Would at least take it out of the equation.

As said, just bypass it... Will rule it out when you do breakdown

Mine was disconnected when I bought my DJ. I refitted it once to see what would happen, and it did the losing power/coasting to a halt thing you describe. Bypassed it again (as above).
I think the Golf might have used the same part if you want to replace it, but it doesn't actually seem to do anything...

Good news.
Sometimes I wonder what happened to all the VW T3 designers who could presumably answer loads of our questions.

Well, 50 miles & all seems good, so it must be that Idle-stabilizer thingy.
I like things to run as they should & would like to replace unit.
Where can I get one? Golf?

Re: 2.1 DJ. Syncro. Total cut out when driving.
Hi,
I have been having similar problems. Van would cut out intermittently. I noticed that when it cut out, the rev counter dropped to zero like a stone, even though the engine was connected to the wheels and still turning. I checked the wiring and the signal output wire from the hall sender on the distributor was not finding its way to pin 18 on the ECU.
I put a new wire in and it works! Hope this helps a bit.
