Starter motor advice Urgent advice needed please

Post by nevill3 »

I am due to go away tomorrow and the van wouldn't start today when I went to take it for a fresh tank of diesel. I checked all the usual problems and settled on a faulty starter motor......it wouldn't even spin when directly connected to the battery bypassing the solenoid. So off it has come and once stripped down I found that the brushes are practically non existent and the armature (I think) has a couple of copper sections badly pitted, enough to probably short out to the next section. So I need a new starter motor for a 1.6D non turbo with a 5 speed gearbox.

A little research on-line suggests that any VW T25 diesel starter will fit, are there any others that fit too, I will be frantically searching tomorrow for a replacement or the Holidays cancelled before it begins.

And today Lorraine has said she has had enough and may want to sell it..........Nooooooooooooooooooooooooo..........I said but finances are getting severely stretched just keeping this on the road.

Any help or advice greatly appreciated

There some places that can re-work old electric motors, might be worth seeing if you can find someone who can do that - maybe you'll only find them in a bigger City but worth a try...

ETA: I hear good things of this place http://www.westlancsautoelectrics.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; but have never used them myself

Makes me glad I bought a spare starter motor on ebay the other day for £10!

Thanks for all the replies, After following a trail around the local garages in Kendal I found one that could supply a brand new, not an exchange one for £120 by lunchtime, so I duly ordered it and it is now on the van and we a readying ourselves for the off......
