How to remove screws/bolts

Post by ChrisG »

Hi folks,

Just removed custom mirrors of the van and replaced with original T25 wing mirrors (so I can use external silverscreen on front cab when camping)

However there are brackets left on the body work and I cant remove them. They are bolted on. (See attached pic)
How do I get them off? All I can think is to drill them out but seems drastic. What are they and how do I get them off?

No probs if it leaves holes in body work as I can fill and spray over...

Advise please

Regards
Chris

They look strange. Are there any parts of these fixings on the other side of the frame? Look similar to rivets.

Are you selling these mirrors once removed etc? Maybe interested if they are Syncro mirrors.

Hi,
No access to other side to see but I beleive they could be rivets.

Regarding the mirrors, unfortunately they are damaged, another reason for removing but would have been glad to give you them for free if they were in good nick. Thks for your response anyway

Think they are rivets but the stub has snapped off externally. Happens if the wrong size of rivet is used (lengthwise rather than width). I think, cos it happened to me once when I tired to 'make do' with what I had to hand. Can't remember how I got mine out but I remember it was a bitch - think I might have cut them as close as possible to the face of the rivet using a junior hacksaw (which at least leaves a flat surface on the stub), then used a very small drill to make a pilot hole in the stub to guide a larger bit in to drill the rivet flange off.

Thanks 1664,
The drill bit option was the only way I can think off also.

Will give it a go...

First get a small punch and you may find that the protruding bits will tap through(unless waterproof sealed rivits were used) failing this then hard disc on the grinder and apply at 90' to remove most of the stub then drill through

Trouble with using rivets that are too long is the part behind the metal that expands as the stub is pulled through it tends to curl round on itself to form a sort of a 'C' shape and stops the stub from being tapped out backwards. That's what mine did anyway - right pain in the backside.

very true but the rivits may not be too long , often soft ones allow the pin to pull and shear in this way.easy way to find out tap tap TAP. SMACK, ah get the grinder :rofl

Hi,
Thanks for all the replies. Will get the drill out.

They are more of an eye sore than anything else, just want to get rid of them.
I'll give it a go and let you all know.

Keep them, replace the broken parts and avoid going back to the common style floppy good for nothing postage stamp mirrors :ok

Post up a pic of what is broken and we can direct you to a replacement :ok
