stock complete 2.1dj- whats it worth?

Post by youde4 »

Whats a complete 225000km 2.1 problem free engine worth? Its whats in the van currently, and im just thinking about engine swaps and if i sold the complete engine and bought a more economical vag one with the cash earned?

Runs sweet as a nut, and gets regular servicing.

I swear ive seen a few pop on ebay go for enough for me do buy a decent donor car

At that kind of mileage it'll be ripe for a rebuild, if it hasn't had one before?

For the whole shooting match: engine with fuel system, loom, ecu etc. I'd say £500 absolutely top money, if I wanted a complete one. The engine on it's own is worth about £200 as a core.

I sold a complete one (untested) for £150

I sold a second complete one for £350 (see running)

I bought a VERY low mileage one for over a grand, all bargins in my opinion.

I just bought a very good running complete DJ, minus all of the fuel injection stuff for £400, It did have a nearly new exhaust system on it, complete with heat shield etc, and the clutch...I had the option of the injection system for an extra £100, but I didn't wan't it....I fitted a Pierburg carb set up.

It really is one of the sweetest engines that I have heard, although there was a very slight "whistle" from the water pump, so I put a brand new one on it.

Very happy with the purchase.

Its gone into a 1989 big bumper/square headlight high-top Autosleeper Trident, previously powered by the original 1915cc DG engine, which was tired to say the least...The performance difference is massive.

At £400, I thought this was a bargain?

Thanks for all the replies, some very interesting stuff!

Mines not been rebuilt as far as i know. Its got a full vw service history up to 2003 i think, then was hardly driven until i bought it in germany in 2010. all ive done engine wise is head gaskets, lots of oil and filter changes, (free from my dads work so i take advantage!) timings been done a few times, new leads, plugs, coil, lambda, clutch. its a shame because i love this engine, its so easy to work on and sounds lovely as well as being really smooth. It just cant go up hills!

On another note, has anyone fitted a 1.8 20vt from an early tt/leon/octavia? ive seen a few skoda Vrs's floating around for not much money,

a DJ that can't go up hills is fecked.

chust for anyone's information, DJ's are highly sought after and virtually unobtainium in swissland.

i recently sold a pair of cyl. heads for more than you guys think a whole engine is worth. :pimp

Re TT 1.8 20v engine. Guess it would fit ?? 180bhp would be ample, but 225 may destroy the transmission?
Non turbo 3.2 vr6 must be the best VAG option, more low down grunt, but too tall for the engine compartment???

And re-ring it along with fresh barrels. If the ring grooves aren't worn. But they certainly will be, thanks to the chrome top ring and the mileage. They aren't really much good after 100k from what I've seen so far.

typically, how much does an engine rebuild cost? Im really quite happy with the stock engine (ish), but is it worth rebuilding or swapping? bearing in mind not having to pay labour for an engine swap....

Indeed Mr Youd4. Is anyone (Ian SB, Simon TMT, PMT, SMS, FWIW) currently rebuilding 1.9 or 2.1 WBXs ?

That is, anyone specialising in rebuilding these
