Cheers guys - at the moment it's just 2 coats. I'm going to do a 3rd coat on a few areas to give it a bit more durability and deeper colour then leave well alone for a month. Will see how it looks then before deciding whether to flat it or just polish. The panels aren't all 100% straight and smooth so if I go too shiny I suppose it'll show. To be honest, it's the first time we've had any kind of shine on her so we're pretty happy!

Covkid - it would be good to see how the repair looks against 6 year old paint. Bad luck with the collision...

You can't grumble at that fella. You obviously must have applied even coats to start with. It saves a lot of time with the flatting and polishing. I find it amazing how in some areas its possible to get an almost flawless coat even without flatting and others require more work afterwards. I think it has much to do with how quickly you work and move on with any given area. Hanging around too long can create a rougher surface if you start picking up paint that is already reaching flashing point.

to be fair i found it loads better with expensive roller heads one head would do the whole van. I started with the cheapo ones and the finish was all over the place

Could anyone tell me whether you can get Rustoleum in a dark brown colour like the Westfalia Joker? To be honest, any pics of your vans painted in any shade of Rustoleum brown would be a great help, as you can't really tell what they're going to turn out like from the colour chart on your computer!

Has anyone done a complete colour change?
If so how have you got around the colour in the inside, the doors, around windows, footwells etc. Have you painted them if so what did you use? Roller, brush or pad?

I used a combination of those although I rollered areas that really show up like inside of front doors.

Thanks, it just looks like a really fiddly job, I'll just have to get on and do it while the Weathers bad I can do the inside.

Its sometimes difficult to paint up to certain areas particularly if everything is still in place. Mask, use a brush to get to edges first then immediately roller afterwards. Remove door cards as a minimum.

good idea, didn't think off spraying!

You may not get a perfect match though. Others have reported differences between rattle cans and tins. As always, paint is best bought in batches - like wallpaper.

I do have a compressor and lots of paint so could spray myself ( no not myself! Lol)
But as you have said previously it'll probably cause lots of over spray.

Hi Guys,

Will definitely be going the rustoleum way just want to check that the primer I've just bought isn't going to cause any problems. It's from FMP Motor Factors and is labelled 1K, guy said to thin it about 10% with cellulose thinners to spray.
Code is CHU0503/1.
Working my way around the rust and then plan to prime a corner and apply rustoleum to the rear quarter as a test.
Gonna try roller first and then spray, see what finish I can get. As it cures between coats I'll carry on tacking the rust before flatting etc.
Once I've worked out how best to apply etc then I'll tackle the whole van.

I'd leave it until the weather cools (which is probably when you've done all the priming etc anyway), it's likely to dry really quickly in this heat without giving you any time to 'work' the paint and get a good finish. I'm intending to put another coat on mine but it's probably going to wait until September now.
