30 year old Electrolux 122 fridge - Asbestos?!?

Post by ed_crouch »

Hi all,

Got a dooer-upper of a T25 camper. Its 30 years old and has an original Electrolux 122 2-way fridge in it. Still works perfectly! Well, the flame failure safety probe needed re-securing into the firebox to stop it going out every 10 minutes, but other than that...

Question: does anyone know if the insulating jacket around the gas chimney and 12V heating element contains asbestos? At that age, asbestos was still in common use, and having had the fridge out, the wadding is exposed at the top, and looks similar to Rockwool... Do I really want to spend my weekends sleeping next to a gentle stream of cooling air wafting Asbestos into the van atmosphere???

Sorry if this idea is worrisome, but I thought I'd ask incase anyone knows whether it would be asbestos based or not?

Thankyou.

I doubt it. Asbestos generally comes in sheets or is 'sprayed' on in fibrous form. Rockwool is cheap and easy to wrap around objects. But I'm no expert, why not ring Electrolux and ask them?
