Torque converter - does it need to be filled?

Post by ed_crouch »

Hi all,

I'm new here. Myself and my wife recently bought an '82 Autohomes Kamper 2.0 Aircooled Auto. She has an Auto only driving license, so Auto it is. It's a doer-upper, with the usual rust and mechanical problems. I've built and restored cars before, and know my spanners very, very well. Although Auto gearboxes are relatively new to me from a maintenance perspective (there isn't much I can reasonably do with the DSG box on the Golf, it goes in to the dealers every 40k for a fluid change and thats about it)...

To the point: I have the engine out for a rebuild, and I removed the Torque converter too. I intend to replace the transmission fluid. Does the Torque converter on the T25 3speed BW auto gearbox need to be filled manually, or will the gearbox fill it when it's fired up?

As a side-question - will Dexron do the job, or do I really need to track down some TypeF ATF for the box?

I gather the final drive unit uses Hypoid EP80W90 gear oil (GL5? I understand the Comma GL5 I have includes a corrosion inhibitor for the brass/Phossy bronze bits)?

Thankyou for your help. I have been through the Wiki but haven't found what I'm looking for.

All the best,

Ed.

Yes it needs to be filled. If you have drained it.You could do with a copy of the bentley service manual. Its not cheap. But its well worth the money. It covers the auto box extensively.http://www.justkampers.com/shop/11-0975 ... 11239.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Dextron 2.Will do the job.
