Subaru-to-VW Tacho mod

Post by silverbullet »

Has anyone personally done this for an early EJ22 conversion? I've finally got hold of a really nice condition "full-house" dash from a circa 1985 van, to fit into the 1990 bus with it's Subaru engine of similar vintage and get rid of the nasty aftermarket tacho that's been perched on top of the dash pod for years. The only relevant thread that I can obviously find is this one:

https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.p ... &p=7608806" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Does the resistor mod described in the vanagon link work ok and is it reasonably accurate over the full rpm range?

I can't ship the loom out to someone like AndyMc or Richard Jones as it's a nasty old hacked about loom and something like 20 years old now. I'd just like a VW tacho that works properly!

Cool. So just swap the resistors and connect the Subaru ecu tacho output to the pcb plug and it's job done?

Not being funny but how did you check the rpm accuracy? I have a mechanical contact-type test tacho but rigging a drive to the crank nose would be tricky and/or dangerous!

I followed instructions. De solder 1 resistor and then solder in the 2k one. Checked accuracy on emissinos tester by connecting rpm sensor. Gives same reading as dash so must be some where near.
Didn't have to do anything with my sub tacho loom as rjes did engine loom and just did resistor mod and all worked but yes would say I have loom connected so you would need to do same. Hope that makes abit of sense.

Tacho resistor mod was a little fiddly but turned out OK. Removing the wiring "additions" and putting it all back into the engine loom trunking is where the time will go. It's not tested yet, thanks to the weather...
