How to change front diff oil seal?
Hi - has any one got a drawing or advice on changing front diff oil seal (weeping just behind prop shaft flange)?
- I'm assuming just remove large centre nut (prop shaft off) and it'll be obvious but wanted to check proceedure/pitfalls first before pulling anything apart!
Also anyone know what would be torque for said nut when putting it back? Consensus seems to be mark nut and count no of turns but if some one has the figure that would be good.
Have searched forum but no luck. Any advice would be appretiated cheers!

Ah...i thought you meant the output flange seals...just take nut off..no preload or such like on that to fret over, might need a puller to get flange off..simple stuff tho.i seem to recall tourque is 125 nm...can check later for you if no one else pipes up.

Re: How to change front diff oil seal?
Thanks alistair - really helpful - and a diagram!
How'd you get the pictures of the underside of my van with all that sprayed oil?
And this was interesting.... "the diff mount bolts left loose for a few miles, then tightened up. Just to allow the front diff to settle in a happy place (a sort of horizontal self alignment)."
I'll deffo be back for a longer read on your 'shooftie ' site.........
Cheers,

Re: How to change front diff oil seal?
the whole subject of propshaft alignment is a contentious one. Leaving aside vertical alignment/flange angles and gross lateral mis-alignment, leaving the front diff mounting bolts slightly loose for a few miles then tightened up to final torque doesn't seem to hurt but I can't say if it is a truly required step. I haven't done any double blind studies.

PS at the risk of sounding snarky, get a Bentley manual. Seal replacement covered nicely, and who knows there might be another repair on the van needed

Not snarky at all - I really should, as you say there just may be a chance that I'll need to fix summat else some time

- where do I get one from?
The prop alignment thing needs another thread.... but I'll do a search first!

Re: How to change front diff oil seal?
Finally got this done today.
Made up metal bar to hold flange still and drifted new seal on using a 46mm socket = perfect fit.
Thanks for your help
