Re: ct engine replaceing cu engine
Just to clarify; you're removing a 2l CU and fitting a 1.6l CT, yes? The 2l isn't exactly a performer and the 1.6 is plain slow, also if my mates experience with his 1.6 is anything to go by it uses just as much fuel if not more than my 2l.
So, whilst it can be done, I wouldn't.

Re: ct engine replaceing cu engine
sure you / laurrie dont mean a cj?
a ct is gash, certainly cheaper to tune than a cu(type 1 motor) but your 20bhp down to start.......

Hello,
Yep its me....
So you still havn't made your mind up eh.......
The opinions expressed by members is hopefully of their own experience.
A shagged out ct engine, giving 50 bpp (33 kw). when new( quoted max speed 103 kph is hardly going to set the world on fire.
The CT was the crankcase design for the wasserboxer. It was offered only in a detuned version, developing less power than the lighter T2 bay.
Look, cheapo option, for the same price as the beetle kit I told you about, you can get a 1776 volumetric upgrade.
This, coupled with 'overjetting your standard, Solex pict 34-4 carb, and fitting a Bosch knock off SVDA dizzy will give you the power you need for third gear climbs, after that more tuning is a waste of effort as the standard ct van box gears will limit things...
If however the engine was originally a 2 litre, then you will be able to generate 70 bhp without difficulty.
Oh. and while I'm saving you all this money......
Think of spending out on all new bearings......
Then you can also think of a hotter cam (more overlap)....
And then skim the flywheel and port and polish everything...
And then up the revs from 4200 to 5500......
Buy a rev counter....
Cry at the 22 mpg fuel consumption,.......
Think about fitting single point fuel injection......
Thats where I am......
Cordialement,
