And the breather/balance pipe accross the middle has a wee bracket onto the underbody, just to make it really bloody difficult

Ah yes...forgot about that. You can get to it from underneath easily if your van hasn't been lowered. Refitted before putting tank back then push everything back into the gromits. If painting the tank and taking the fuel sender out I would change the seal. Check all the gromits and decide if they need changing...
