removing ovespray....

Post by fodtommo »

I had the primer put on the van yesterday, but to my horror have realised that we missed the corner of the pop top when masking up. :(

This means I now have 2 pack primer on the pop top seal and a patch of overspray on the roof.

Paint on the roof is ok, just needs a good flat and polish.

what is the best way to get off both items?

I was thinking thinners for the seal & wet n dry for the roof???

any suggestions gratefully received!!!!!!!

Thinners for the seal (but be careful) and try a cutting compound for the overspray on the roof before using wet&dry.

I'd try a little thinner on the seal, but take care as too much could soften the seal rubber, particularly if its very old and ruin it and try some 800/1200 grit wet & dry with some washing-up liquid to remove the overspray and then some farecla g3 compound on a damp cloth to restore the now dulled area.

But, if the overspray is very heavy, you will need to take a lot of care in removing it as you dont want to bust through the gel coat on the fibreglass pop-top so ideally, use a rubber block rather than your fingers with the wet/dry paper.

Thanks guys,

it is not too heavy, but a section of it is 'solid' rather than speckled.

Im less worried about the seal, it could do with a new one anyway.

I have G3 and G5 in the garage any way, but im pretty sure itll need 800/1200 wet and fry first, dont think a cutting compound will do it - and I thought it was a good idea getting that Sigma extra tough corrosion inhibiting offshore spec primer from work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! not looking forward to getting it off :(

I did wonder about thinners on the roof quickly, wipe away as much as possible, then wet n dry?

Thanks for your thoughts

Trouble is, the 2-pack will have cured well by now so thinners [cellulose?] won't really hit it that hard; more likely to damage the surrounding area too

But there's no harm in trying with some thinner on a rag on a very small area first and see where that takes you but personally, I'd use the wet/dry route and take my time.

Good luck with it though :ok
